Women’s Soccer Defeats Rhode Island in Home Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears women's soccer program (2-0-0) defeated Rhode Island (3-1-0) in their home opener by a score of 3-2.
Senior captain Naya Cardoza found the back of the net early, scoring her first goal of the season less than six minutes into the game. Ella Weil and Audrey Lam assisted on the corner kick play.
Ella Weil scored a goal of her own later in the first half, as Joy Okonye threaded a great pass to the sophomore. The Bears outshot Rhode Island 9-1 in the first half, but conceded a goal, making it 2-1 at the break.
The second half was evenly played until Ayla Sahin scored the third goal for Brown, making it 3-1, as Angelina Vargas picked up an assist. URI answered right back, scoring to cut the lead in half. The Bears earned 8 corner kicks to the Rams' 4. The possession total was nearly identical, as the Rams held the ball 51% of the time. The high-scoring affair was physical throughout, but Brown prevailed in the end.
"It was a dog fight, and we knew it would be, but it's good to scrap out that win," said Messing Family head coach Kia McNeill. "We're a team that wants to be multi-dimensional in that attack—we want to be dangerous on set pieces, but we also want to be dangerous in the run of play... definitely something to build off of going forward."
Brown will travel to Storrs, Connecticut, on Thursday to take on the UConn Huskies. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
