Information for Prospective Student-Athletes
NCAA member schools have adopted rules to create an equitable recruiting environment that promotes student-athlete well-being. The rules define who may be involved in the recruiting process, when recruiting may occur and the conditions under which it may be conducted. Recruiting rules seek, as much as possible, to control intrusions into the lives of student-athletes.
Â
All Brown University staff members, current student-athletes, parents, donors, and other athletics interests are subject to all Division I recruiting regulations set forth by the NCAA.
Â
Any solicitation of a prospective student-athlete (or prospect), either directly or through legal guardian(s), by an institutional staff member or by a representative of the institution's athletics interests (e.g., donor) for future participation in intercollegiate athletics is considered ‘recruiting.’
Â
An individual is deemed a prospective student-athlete once they have started the 9th grade. Please note, some sports consider 7th and 8th graders as prospective student-athletes for camps and clinics only. Once the individual has formally committed to the institution and has satisfied all high school graduation or transfer requirements, they are no longer considered a prospect.
Â
Prospects can refer to the NCAA’s ‘Want to Play College Sports’ page for more information on the recruitment process and general requirements for all NCAA Divisions.
Â
COMMUNICATION & RECRUITING ACTIVITY
Per NCAA regulations, only after certain dates may coaches and staff be able to participate recruiting activity with individuals that have hit prospect age.
Â
All prospective student-athletes, regardless of age, are welcome to complete a sport’s recruiting questionnaire found on the Brown Bear website - specifically the ‘Athletics Prospective Student-Athlete Recruiting Questionnaires’ page.
Â
Additionally, coaches and staff must abide by sport specific recruiting calendar restrictions. These restrictions can be found on the NCAA’s ‘Division I and II Recruiting Calendars and Guides’ page.
Â
RECRUITING VISITS TO BROWN’S CAMPUS
Unofficial Visits:
Prospects may be invited for unofficial visits to campus, in which there is no maximum amount per institution. During an unofficial visit all expenses incurred must be paid by the prospect and/or their accompanying family members. However, institutions may provide up to three complimentary tickets to Brown’s home games to be used by the PSA and their family members.
Â
Official Visits:
NCAA regulations permit all prospective student-athletes to be invited for one official visit per Division I institution. During an official visit, the athletic department can pay for the prospect and family member’s permissible transportation, reasonable entertainment (including complimentary tickets to Brown’s home games), and standard lodging and meals.
Â
Prospects will need to do the following prior to the start of their official visit to Brown University, per NCAA and University policy:
All staff members that regularly meet with minors on campus (e.g., camp or clinic attendees, prospective student-athletes) and student-athletes that will serve as hosts for unofficial and official visits are required to be compliant with the University Minors Protection Policy. Compliance includes a completed background check and yearly education.
