STORRS, Conn. – The Brown Bears women's soccer program defeated the UConn Huskies by a score of 1-0. The Bears improved to 3-0-0, while the Huskies fell to 1-2-0.
The Bears were aggressive early, challenging every contested ball and looking to put the Huskies on their heels. UConn was steady defensively in the early going.
Ayla Sahin used her blazing speed to beat her defender and finish on the UConn goaltender to make it 1-0 Bears. She timed her run with perfection, leading to an ideal scoring opportunity before depositing her third goal of the season.
"She's got unbelievable pace," said Messing Family head coach Kia McNeill at halftime. "I think it's a huge weapon for us, getting behind defenses."
Brown was able to stave off three corner kicks from the Huskies in the first half, deflecting every ball away comfortably.
In the second half, the Bears continued their aggressiveness, consistently maintaining possession in the final third.
Ella Weil entered the game in the second half, feeding Sahin for Brown's first great chance of the second half. It seemed to open the floodgates for the Bears to continue attacking.
The midfield of the Bears kept the ball in the opposing half for much of the second half, not allowing the Huskies to generate any opportunities until the 80th minute. UConn generated a great chance, but Brown was up to the task, forcing the ball wide after a dangerous crossing attempt.
The Bears were forced to defend their lead in the final 10 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Bella Schopp made a diving effort to get a piece of UConn's best scoring chance of the game in the 86th minute. The ball was cleared, and the Bears went on to win the game 1-0, improving to 3-0-0 on the season.
Brown outshot UConn 7-6, with two being on goal. Schopp saved both Huskies' shots on goal, picking up her third win of the season and 19th career victory.
"I thought our team played really well tonight against a tough UConn side," said Kia McNeill. "Ayla scored a fantastic goal in the first half and was a constant threat throughout the game. The backline was phenomenal, and everyone was locked in from start to finish. It was great to see a full 90-minute performance. This group has only been together for a few weeks, but tonight you could really see the potential we have and the exciting direction we're headed in."
Brown will return home for a Labor Day matchup with the Minnesota Gophers. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
