Women’s Soccer Hosts End-of-Year Banquet, Presents Team Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's soccer team held its year-end banquet on Monday evening at the Brown Faculty Club and presented its annual team awards.
In addition to awards, the senior class received white sweaters, and the freshman class received brown sweaters. Traditional white letter sweaters are given to graduating seniors at Brown, while first-year student-athletes receive brown letter sweaters.
The full list of team awards, their descriptions, and the winners is below.
Ridgely Most Valuable Player – Joy Okonye
The Ridgely Most Valuable Player Award is presented annually to the MVP, as voted by the players. The award honors Professor and Mrs. Beverly Ridgely for their outstanding contributions to Brown Women's Soccer.
Denis Chartier Golden Boot Award – Naya Cardoza and Joy Okonye
The Denis Chartier Golden Boot Award was established in 2011 and is presented annually to the team's leading point-scorer. It honors former Assistant Coach Denis Chartier, who died at the age of 56 and was a loyal, dedicated coach with the Brown women's soccer program for 15 years.
R.I.S.E. Award – Audrey Lam
The R.I.S.E. Award, established in 2022, recognizes a player on our team who demonstrates Resilience, Integrity, Selflessness, and Effort. It honors someone who has shown significant growth as a player, has overcome adversity, and continues to demonstrate their commitment to the team through effort, mental fortitude, and a moral compass as they navigate the demands of being a student-athlete.
Margeson Prell Team Spirit Award – Corine Gregory and Hayley Houston
The Margeson/Prell Team Spirit Award is presented annually to the player who demonstrates the most team spirit, as voted by the players. The award honors Jane Margeson, "Soccer Enthusiast," mother of Bill Margeson '37, Hall of Fame (Soccer 1970), and Professor Warren Prell, who served as faculty liaison to the women's soccer program from 1995 to 2015. His support, advice, and enthusiasm for the student-athletes and the program were outstanding.
Dobson-Kay Coaches Award – Shoshana Gevelber
The Dobson-Kay Coaches' Award is presented annually to the player(s) selected by the coaches for outstanding contribution, dedication, and sportsmanship. The award honors Stan Dobson '58 and Gene Kay '58 for their strong support and promotion of the Brown women's soccer program.
Arlene Gorton '52 Rookie of the Year – Jael-Marie Guy
The Arlene Gorton '52 Rookie of the Year Award is named for a former Brown Associate Director of Athletics. Arlene Gorton was instrumental in keeping Brown women's soccer at the forefront and in enabling Brown to host the first-ever Ivy League Women's Soccer Championship and the first-ever collegiate women's soccer regional championship. She was a pioneer for all women's sports at Brown in the 70s and 80s. The Arlene Gorton '52 Rookie of the Year Award, established in 2015, goes to the outstanding newcomer in the program, as voted on by the players.
Sarah Nicholson Outstanding Senior – Naya Cardoza
Initiated in 1996, the Sarah Nicholson Outstanding Senior Award is presented to a senior on the team who, through total dedication and loyalty, has given the most to the team's good.
