Women’s Soccer Defeats Providence 4-0 in Final Non-Conference Game
9/17/2025 9:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team (6-1-2) defeated the Providence College Friars (3-2-1) on the road 4-0, as they won the Crosstown Cup for the second straight year.
"We referred to today's game as our final "dress rehearsal" before beginning Ivy League play," said Messing Family Head Coach Kia McNeill. "Our goal was to continue sharpening our strengths and capitalizing on the opponent's weaknesses, and I think we did exactly that. It was a dominant performance, with four goals from four different players, which speaks volumes about our depth and quality in the final third. Back-to-back 4-0 wins give us great momentum and a real confidence boost heading into Ivy play. We need to keep building on this performance, but if we can consistently show up and play like this, we'll be a tough team to beat."
The Bears started the game strong, firing shots early. They took the first four shots in the game before the Friars found some opportunities of their own.
Friar midfielder Colleen Casey shot it past Bears goalkeeper Gurleen Toor, but Brown defender Layla Shell was there to knock the ball out of harm's way. After that, it was all Bears.
Junior midfielder Joy Okonye took a through pass from Rylee Keeley and made one move before scoring a long-range shot that hit the crossbar and went into the goal.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead into halftime, with a 9-3 advantage in shots.
In the second half, senior defender Naya Cardoza continued her scoring streak. Brooke Birtwistle delivered a corner kick into the box, and Cardoza headed it in for her fourth goal in the last three games. She leads the Ivy League with five goals this season.
Ayla Sahin scored her fourth goal of the season in the 72nd minute, as Okonye delivered a great pass. Sahin fired it past the Providence goalkeeper to make it 3-0.
The Bears weren't done yet, as junior forward Angelina Vargas found the back of the net from an Ella Weil pass to make it 4-0.
All four goals were assisted, as the Bears outshot the Friars 18-5. Brown earned five corner kicks, and 22 Bears played minutes in this game.
The Bears will begin conference play on Sunday when they travel to Yale to take on the Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
