PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (19-10) pushed its win streak to four games as the Bears swept Rhode Island (9-23) in a doubleheader at the Brown Softball Field on Wednesday (April 9).
It is the second time this season that Brown has had back-to-back shutouts with the first coming on March 1 against Merrimack (6-0) and March 8 against Lipscomb (3-0). Brown has now shutout Rhode Island in each of their last four games, having outscored the Rams 27-0 in those contests.
GAME 1: Brown 7, Rhode Island 0
Another gem from Alexis Guevara (9-5) led Brown to a shutout win over Rhode Island to start the day for the Bears. Guevara struck out five batters in six innings of work, while scattering four hits and one walk. Edie Cobb finished out the game throwing the seventh inning with one walk and two strikeouts. Guevara's five strikeouts gave the senior 99 strikeouts for the season, a new career-high. With the six scoreless innings, Guevara dropped her ERA to 1.64.
Jasmine Hsiao had her first three-hit game of the season going 3-for-3 with a triple and home run, while driving in two batters and earning a walk. Laurel Moody had two RBI, while Cameron Zytkewicz Ray and Abby Bettencourt each drove in one. Bettencourt also collected two hits on the afternoon.
The Bears got things going quickly as Hsiao led off the bottom of the first with her third home run of the season, clearing the left center field wall easily. Brown loaded the bases with one out after a walk, a double by Alyssa Villarde and another walk. Hsiao singled to center as the Bears increased its lead to 2-0.
In the fourth, a walk and throwing error put two runners on before Moody doubled over the right fielder's head to score both runners.
Brown added a run on a passed ball in the fifth and picked up two more in the sixth. Hsiao led off the sixth with a triple and Moody walked with one out. Zytkewicz Ray singled to right to score Hsiao before Bettencourt doubled to left center to bring home Berlinger, making it 7-0.
GAME 2: Brown 11, Rhode Island 0 (5 innings)
The Bears chased daylight in the second game of the doubleheader with the Rams as Brown picked up an 11-0 win in five innings to close out the day.
Macy Borowski (7-3) earned the win with three shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Annie Finch closed out the game with one hit and a strikeout over two innings.
Seven batters finished with a hit in the game with Zytkewicz Ray collecting two base knocks. Maggie Foxx, Laurel Moody and Abby Bettencourt all drove in two runs. Both Foxx and Moody walked three times as the Bears drew eight free passes on the evening.
In the top of the first, Rhode Island put runners on second and third with one out but Borowski induced a flyout that was too shallow for a sacrifice and got a strikeout to keep the Rams off the board.
To begin the bottom of the inning Hsiao singled and Foxx and Moody walked to load the bases before URI made a pitching change. Zytkewicz Ray singled past the shortstop to score Brown's first run and the Bears picked up another run on a groundout by Bettencourt to lead 2-0 after one inning.
Brown added to their lead in the third as Foxx walked to start the inning and Moody doubled to right center to score Brown's catcher. Zytkewicz Ray singled to center to move Moody to third and took second on the throw in. Brown's next run came with a single by Bettencourt before Amanda Deng singled to right to make the game 5-0 and force another pitching change.
The inning continued with Villarde reaching on an error, allowing Bettencourt to cross the plate. After a walk to Vanessa Alexander, Lily Berlinger brought home a run on a groundout to make it 7-0. Two batters later, Maggie Foxx singled to left to score Villarde and Alexander and the Bears took a 9-0 lead.
The Bears final two runs came in the bottom of the fourth with a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk.
With daylight dwindling, Annie Finch, who entered for Borowski in the fourth, allowed a two-out single but got a groundout to end the game in five innings.
