PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (11-21) fell 5-2 in a close battle with cross-town foe Providence (21-14) at Glay Field on Wednesday (April 15).
The Bears had the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh but could not bring home the runs needed to stage a comeback.
Elli Thompson and Kaicee Klus each finished with two hits and Maggie Foxx had a two-run double for the Bears.
In the circle, Annie Finch got the start, throwing two scoreless innings. Edie Cobb finished out the game, picking up one strikeout in four innings.
Brown got the scoring started in the top of the third following one-out singles by Klus and Abby Bettencourt. Foxx stepped to the plate and hit a double over the head of the right fielder. As Foxx was caught in a rundown, Bettencourt was able to score to make it 2-0.
The lead was short-lived as a one-out walk was followed by a two-run home run to tie the game.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, an infield single, followed by a throwing error led to two more runs for Providence. The Friars would tack one more run in the sixth for the final tally.
