NEW YORK – Brown softball (20-11, 6-5 Ivy) split its doubleheader with Columbia (14-14, 7-4 Ivy) to begin its series with the Lions on Sunday (April 13).
Brown's win in the first game of the series gave the Bears their first 20-win season since 2010.
GAME 1: Brown 10, Columbia 2
The bats were hot for the Bears in game one as Brown took down Columbia 10-2 to start its series with the Lions. Leah Carey, Laurel Moody and Alexis Guevara all finished with three hits for Brown.
Guevara's three hits were a career-high and Carey collected three hits for just the third time in her career. Moody finished with her fifth three-hit game of the season.
Carey led the offense with four runs driven in and hit her first home run of the season. Moody drove in three runs and hit her 12th home run of the season, which is one shy of tying the Brown single season record.
Guevara (10-5), picked up her 10th win of the season, throwing six innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and striking out four batters. Guevara has now not allowed an earned run in her last 13 innings and has gone five-straight starts with allowing one earned run or fewer. Annie Finch finished off the game throwing the seventh inning allowing one unearned run.
Columbia picked up a run in the first before Brown responded in the third. After singles by Carey and Kaicee Klus, Moody singled up the middle to score Carey and tie the game.
Singles by Amanda Deng and Guevara started the fourth and after Deng was caught stealing home, Alyssa Villarde doubled to left field to make it 2-1. Carey then turned on an inside pitch and drove the ball over the right field wall for the home run.
The inning continued with Hsiao singling before Klus reached on a fielder's choice. Moody stepped to the plate and hammered a low pitch over the left field wall to make it 6-1.
Brown picked up some insurance in the seventh with a walk to Moody and single by Cameron Zytkewicz Ray to start the inning. A sac bunt moved the two into scoring position before Deng hit a hot shot off the glove of the second baseman that allowed Edie Cobb, who ran for Moody, and Zytkewicz Ray to come home. With two outs, Carey went to the opposite field, finding the left centerfield gap and bringing two more runs home.
GAME 2: Columbia 2, Brown 1
Macy Borowski allowed just one earned run on four hits but the Bears could not bring home a second run in a one-run loss to Columbia to close out the day.
Cameron Zytkewicz Ray finished the game with two of Brown's five hits in the nightcap with Jasmine Hsiao, Laurel Mood and Amanda Deng collecting the other three.
Brown loaded the bases with no outs but a double play on a sacrifice fly ended Brown's threat without bringing a run across.
In the second, Brown got runners to second and third with no outs with a single by Deng and a double by Zytkewicz Ray. The Bears struck as Carey grounded out but brought home Deng to make it 1-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, an error by the Bears extended the inning and allowed a single to score the tying run. It was another single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth that put the Lions ahead 2-1.
Brown's best chance to tie came in the top of the seventh with Zytkewicz Ray singling with two outs but a flyout closed out the contest.
