PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's tennis team (4-5) has earned their fourth win of the season, and second win in a row against Boston University (4-5) on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
"Our players competed hard against a very gritty Boston University. It was a very spirited match from the beginning to the end," Broadbent Family Women's Tennis Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
The Bears had a strong start to the match after clinching the doubles point. Sophomore Dani Ben-Abraham and Bella Hu competed at third doubles earning a 6-3 win over the Terriers' Rhea Rai and Madison Liu. Seniors Addison Ahlstrom and Lindsey Hofflander posted a close 7-5 final against Uma Bakaityte and Gabriella Mikaul at the third line, earning Brown the doubles point.
"Starting in doubles, it looked like BU was going to run away with the first point, but our players really dug deep at lines one and three. Bella and Dani competed with great determination at line three doubles. Lindsey and Addie at line one doubles showed great composure in crucial moments to turn their match around to give us a 1-0 lead," Schmidhauser said.
Brown powered through singles earning wins at the first, third, fourth, and sixth lines. Sophomore Hannah Shen faced off against Emily Zhao in third singles earning a quick win in two sets 6-2, 6-3. Ahlstrom faced BU's Bakaityte at the first line winning in a tiebreaker (7-6(2), 6-4). First-year Ali Maguy put up a fight against BU's Liu at the second line, but ultimately fell in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 1-6). First-year Sari Woo dropped a match at fifth singles to the Terriers' Rai (1-6, 4-6). First-year Bella Hu came in clutch in sixth singles, taking down Sydney Sharma in two sets, clinching the match (6-2, 6-0). The match finished out with sophomore Anne Yang earning one final win at the fourth line against Gulbransen in three sets 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.
"Addie followed up her great performance in doubles with a gritty singles win. Hannah was relentless and stayed committed to her game plan the entire match while breaking down her opponent. Bella Hu was unstoppable at line six, and played her match with total clarity and great execution, clinching the match for us. Annie Yang came through at the end against a very spirited opponent. Annie kept competing and I was glad to see she didn't back down at the end of the match and found a way to outcompete her opponent,"
