CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown women's tennis team wrapped up their thrilling Ivy Invitational run on day two after showcasing standout performances.
Ali Maguy and Anne Moody advanced into the quarterfinals after their opponent withdrew due to injury. Hannah Shen and Anne Yang battled Yale's No. 4 Shyla Aggarwal and Erin Ha but were edged out 8-4. Maguy and Moody then faced a tough match against Harvard's No. 3 Charlotte Owensby and Claire Shao, falling 8-3.
In singles, Anne Moody lost matches to Cornell's Dylan Gelber (6-3, 6-2) and Penn's Sarah Wang (6-4, 4-6, 10-6). Hannah Shen fell to Harvard's Charlotte Owensby (6-1, 6-0) but rebounded in the back draw to defeat Columbia's Michelle Li (6-4, 6-4). On day one, Ali Maguy won her first two singles matches over Penn's Lara Stojanovski (6-3, 6-3) and Harvard's No. 4 Kavya Karra (1-6, 6-4, 11-9). However, she concluded her tournament run on day two in a 6-3 and 6-4 loss to Dartmouth's Alexandra Orlins. Anne Yang lost to Princeton's Madeleine Jessup 7(7)-6(4), 6-0, then won a shutout back draw match against Dartmouth's Valentina Cruz-Bonilla (6-0, 6-0) on day two.
"This weekend was another opportunity for our players to test themselves against Ivy League competition in an individual event," Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
"The highlight of the weekend was Ali's singles performances. On the first day, she beat two quality opponents in back-to-back matches. In her second match vs. Harvard, Ali showed a lot of poise after dropping the first set 1-6. She bounced back with aggressive, focused play, coming up with great plays at crucial points in the match. Even when facing a match point in the deciding match tiebreaker, Ali didn't back down, kept swinging through her shots, and fought her way to a victory," said Schmidhauser. "Even though her quarterfinal singles match didn't go her way today, Ali has made tremendous strides this fall as a player and a competitor. I trust she will continue to build on that momentum."
"Hannah had a quality win in the back draw against a Blue Chip opponent from Columbia. Hannah has worked hard on adding more variety to her game this fall, and it's starting to pay dividends in her game," Schmidhauser concluded.
