Women’s Tennis Defeats URI 5-2 for Third Straight Win
3/2/2025 8:30:00 PM | Women's Tennis
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's tennis team (5-5) took down the Rhode Island Rams (8-2) 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
"We came out very strong in doubles with aggressiveness and great execution, taking the 1-0 lead pretty quickly. URI did a great job fighting back in singles, making us work for every point," Broadbent Family Women's Tennis Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
The Bears took the lead from the start, earning the doubles point after posting wins at the first and third line. Sophomore Hannah Shen and first-year Ali Maguy swept their opponents in their match going 6-0. The pairing of seniors Addison Ahlstrom and Lindsey Hofflander defeated the Rams' Nikki Fernando and Katharina Spieth 6-1.
Brown continued to push through singles, posting four wins there. Shen took down URI's Sophie Herrman at the second line in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. Maguy earned her fourth singles win of the spring season at fourth singles over Grace Darcy (3-6, 7-5, 6-4). Sophomore Dani Ben-Abraham and first-year Sari Woo earned wins at the fifth and sixth lines. Woo's win over the Rams' Klara Nelander clinched the match for the Bears.
"I was proud of most of our players for how they responded when the opponents kept challenging them. Hannah kept pressure on her opponent from the first point to the last. I have been impressed with her growth as a competitor. Ali battled from a set and 0-3 down to outcompete her opponent in an extremely close third set. As a freshman, Ali showed a lot of resilience and ability to let go of mistakes and focus on present-positive, which is such an important skill for good competitors. Sari played a much better match today as she made her opponent work for every point and overwhelmed her with her consistency and strategy. It was a good weekend for the Bears as we continue to up our competitiveness in the second part of our spring season," Schmidhauser added.
