Men's Hockey Drops ECAC Matchup at No. 20 Harvard
12/6/2025 10:08:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The 20th-ranked Harvard Crimson (7-3-1, 5-1-0 ECAC) jumped to an early lead and kept the Brown Bears (3-9-0, 2-6-0 ECAC) at bay throughout the game to take a 7-3 victory Saturday night at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
"We just need to be better. We actually scored goals this weekend but found a way to give up 14," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "We need to be better in all facets of the game. We're trying to take steps, and every time we take a step forward, it seems like we take a step back. Whether it be shift-to-shift or game-to-game, we need more. Guys are just gripping it right now; hockey is a simple game, and we're really overcomplicating it in every way, shape, and form.
"That being said, I still like the team, but we have to figure it out. We've had a very tough schedule – we've been on the road constantly against top teams in the nation. We want to be there, playing these games shows us where we need to take steps. Same as next Tuesday, Providence is a great team, and we have to be ready, and we will."
Ben MacDonald opened the scoring 2:11 into the opening period to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead. MacDonald tipped a loose puck in the slot over Brown goaltender Fred Halyk (11 saves) for his second goal of the season.
Mick Thompson cleaned up his own rebound 3:40 into the frame to double the Crimson lead with his fourth goal of the season.
Brown challenged for a major penalty against Harvard 20 seconds earlier in the Brown offensive zone, but the officials determined Mason Langenbrunner's cross-check on Brian Nicholas did not make enough head contact to warrant a penalty.
Nicholas got the Bears on the board 35 seconds into the middle frame, capitalizing off a Harvard turnover in the Brown offensive zone. Michael Salandra forced the turnover and fed the puck to Nicholas, who wired a shot past Harvard goaltender Ben Charette (18 saves).
Casey Severo scored on the power play 4:49 into the frame to push Harvard's lead back to two goals. The senior collected a pass from Thompson in the slot and beat Halyk for his sixth goal of the season.
Aidan Lane and Philip Tresca tallied goals 80 seconds apart to stretch the Harvard lead to 5-1 and force Tyler Shea (33 saves) into the game for Brown.
Ryan St. Louis tallied his third goal of the season 12:08 into the period to cut into the Crimson lead. Salandra fired the initial shot on Charette on a Brown rush, and St. Louis crashed the net and found the rebound for the goal. Ethan Mistry added the secondary assist on the goal.
St. Louis added his second of the night halfway through the second period off a Brown faceoff win. Brian Nicholas won the faceoff back to St. Louis at the top of the circle for the quick shot. Salandra added the secondary assist on the goal.
Harvard's Lane and Joe Miller tallied goals in the final minutes of the game to push the final score to 7-3.
