Men's Hockey Falls in Mayor's Cup Clash with No. 16 Providence College
12/9/2025 11:19:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (3-10-0, 2-6-0 ECAC) battled to the end in the annual Mayor's Cup against the 16th-ranked Providence College Friars (8-6-2, 4-3-1 HEA), ultimately falling 4-2 Tuesday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"I'm very proud of the team, as I told them, I played for Bill Belisle, and he was a big believer that if you play the right way, play hard, play with pride, play with energy, play with intensity, and you don't win, that's the game," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "It was a good step. If we play that way and bottle that and continue to get a little bit better at some things, we're going to have a great second half.
"The majority of our season is ahead of us. We can either choose to focus on just results, or we can focus on the process and getting better. Ultimately, these games, if we play that way, will go our way with the end result.
"I couldn't be more proud of the team. That was a great hockey game. It was back and forth; we had chances, they had chances, they just found a way to put one more goal in the net before the empty-net goal. The guys played hard."
Brown controlled play in the early part of the first period and Matt Desiderio gave the Bears a 1-0 lead 6:36 into the frame. Dean Bauchiero won a puck battle in the corner to Andrew King, who wired a pass to Desiderio skating down the slot to beat Providence goaltender Philip Svedebäck (29 saves).
Jonathan Fauchon evened the score 10:36 into the first on a delayed Brown penalty. With the extra attacker on the ice, Fauchon found Roger McQueen's rebound to beat Brown goaltender Tyler Shea (43 saves).
Donovan McCoy made it 2-1 Friars with 5:19 remaining in the first off a shot from the point. McCoy caught a pass from Julius Sumpf and blasted a shot through traffic for his first career goal.
McQueen extended PC's lead to 3-1 on the power play 3:11 into the second period. McQueen finished a backdoor feed from Kale McCallum for his fifth goal of the season.
Will Elger pushed Shea and the puck over the goal line late in the second period to make it 4-1 Friars. However, a Brown coach's challenge overturned the call on the ice to keep the Bears within two.
Alex Pineau struck with 1.7 seconds remaining in the period to bring the Bears within a goal. Zackary Tonelli and Matthew Cataldo won a puck battle and moved the puck to the slot, where Pineau wired a shot past Svedebäck for his first goal of the season.
The Friars were awarded an empty-net goal with 37 seconds remaining following a Brown penalty on a PC rush. Tanner Adams was credited with his fourth goal of the season.
