King Records Hat Trick as Men's Hockey Falls at No. 10 Dartmouth
12/5/2025 10:32:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
HANOVER, N.H. – Andrew King recorded a hat trick in his season debut for the first three goals of his collegiate career, but the Brown Bears (3-8-0, 2-5-0 ECAC) dropped a 7-3 final to the tenth-ranked Dartmouth Big Green (9-0-0, 5-0-0 ECAC) Friday night at Thompson Arena.
"We just need to keep working and we have to figure it out," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "Dartmouth is an outstanding hockey team; that's the best team we've seen in a long time. They play the game fast and have one of the best defensemen in the country in Foley. That's a complete team; they're legitimate.
"That being said, I expect more from our team. We'll figure it out. It's going to be a process; we're very young, but we need to grow, and we will. It's a long year, and we'll get after it."
King gave Brown an early lead with his first career goal 2:54 into the first period. The sophomore, playing in his first game of the season, found the loose puck at the net-front to beat Dartmouth goaltender Roan Clarke (14 saves). Matt Desiderio and Ben Poitras picked up the assists on the goal.
The Big Green responded quickly with goals from Hayden Stavroff and Hank Cleaves to take a 2-1 lead with 12:55 remaining in the opening period.
The home team scored again 8:14 into the frame, but a Brown coach's challenge for offside was successful to wipe the goal off the board.
Tyler Shea (19 saves) made a great on a Dartmouth 2-on-1 rush with seven minutes remaining in the period, denying an attempt from Dartmouth's Ryan Schelling.
With 2:50 remaining in the first, King struck for his second goal with a quick shot as he entered the offensive zone. Owen Dyer and Mike Cataldo added the assists on the goal.
A minute later, Dartmouth fired a shot into the back of the net seconds after the net was dislodged. After a lengthy discussion and official review, the goal was disallowed.
A breakaway attempt by Ryan St. Louis in the first minute of the second period was turned aside by Clarke.
Matt Fusco gave Dartmouth a 3-2 lead 2:08 into the second period. Brown challenged for goaltender interference, and despite Shea being knocked over by a Big Green forward, the goal stood.
The Big Green added another pair in the frame to extend the lead to 5-2 and bring Fred Halyk (15 saves) into the game for the Bears.
Brian Nicholas had a shorthanded breakaway in the waning seconds of the middle frame, but Clarke made the stop.
Stavroff tallied his third goal of the night 2:46 into the third period to extend Dartmouth's lead. Cleaves picked up his third assist and fourth point of the night on the goal.
King capped off a career night with his third goal 4:01 into the third period. King crashed the net to finish a feed from Mike Cataldo with Leo Schwartz adding the secondary assist.
Stavroff added a power play goal late in the third to push the final score to 7-3.
