Women’s Soccer Blanks Cornell for Ivy League Win
10/25/2025 4:05:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown Bears (9-2-4, 3-1-2 Ivy League) collected its third conference win with a 2-0 victory over the Cornell Big Red (5-6-4, 2-4-0 Ivy League) Saturday afternoon at Berman Field.
"I'm really happy with the result and the way the team played today," Messing Family Head Coach Kia McNeill said. "It wasn't always pretty, but we grinded it out to get the win and the shutout. Cornell is a dangerous team, and with both teams fighting to keep their postseason hopes alive, these are never easy games to play in.
"I thought Addison Etter was tremendous in goal. She handled a lot of set pieces and service into the box really well. We knew that was one of Cornell's strengths, and her calmness and composure in net helped us manage those moments effectively. I'm really excited for this team and proud that we've put ourselves in a position to compete for the Ivy League Championship next weekend. I've said it all season, but this group is special, and I want to keep coaching them as long as possible."
Joy Okonye recorded her seventh goal of the season in the 31st minute to open the scoring. Angelina Vargas picked up the assist on the goal for her third helper and ninth point of the season.
Okonye's seventh goal of the season matches senior Naya Cardoza and Dartmouth's Stephanie Lathrop for the most in the conference.
The Bears struck again seven minutes later as junior forward Corine Gregory doubled the lead with her fourth goal of the fall campaign.
Etter was strong in the opening half with a pair of saves in her first collegiate start.
The Big Red picked up its first corner kick of the game in the opening minute of the second half, but Etter stood tall to turn aside a shot from Tanum Nelson to preserve the two-goal lead.
Etter recorded her first career clean sheet with five saves in the second half to finish the match with seven.
Brown returns home to host the Princeton Tigers (6-5-3, 4-2-0 Ivy League) on Senior Day at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday, November 1. Brown's six seniors will be honored prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff.
