Women’s Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw Against Indiana

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Big Ten member Indiana on Sunday evening at Stevenson-Pincence Field.
"I thought it was a hard fought battle by both teams," head coach Kia McNeil said. "I'm happy with the result, we could've gotten three points but I'm happy with the tie."
Brown got on the board just six minutes into the contest as Ayla Sahin found Miya Grant-Clavijo, Grant-Clavijo was able to find the back of the net with her right foot.
Following her goal, Grant- Clavijo had an opportunity to double Brown's lead but her chance narrowly missed the net.
The Bears kept their 1-0 advantage for the remaining 39 minutes of the first half. Goalkeeper Bella Schopp stopped four Indiana shots in the opening 45 minutes to preserve Brown's 1-0 advantage. As a team, the Bears had three shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The Hoosiers tied the game in the 54th minute as Olivia Rush was able to drive a shot past Schopp.
Following the Indiana goal, Brown tallied four shots but the Bears were unable to convert.
Brown's best chance of the second half came in the 89th minute when Ayla Sahin made a move around the Indiana goalkeeper and pushed the ball towards the open net. An Indiana defender was able to run back to make the goal line save, keeping the score tied at one.
Following the save, the Bears were rewarded with a corner kick, Layla Shell had a chance on the left side of the 18-yard box, but her header went wide.
Along with Grant-Clavijo's first goal of the season, Sahin picked up her first-career assist as Bella Schopp made a career-high seven saves in the draw.
"For us to compete with a Big Ten team shows we can compete with anybody," McNeill added. "I think there is a lot to build on from this game."
Brown will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 5 when they welcome Central Connecticut State to Stevenson-Pincince Field at 7:00 p.m. The contest against the Blue Devils will be Mental Health Awareness night, fans can purchase tickets at brownbears.com/tickets.
