PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshmen Kyra Treanor and Ella Weil scored their first-career goals as the Brown women's soccer team captured its first win of the season, 2-0 over Central Connecticut State on Thursday evening.
"I think the team was hungry for this one," head coach Kia McNeill said. "We've gotten better and better every game and it was nice to get the shutout and two goals from freshmen today"
The Bears opened the scoring three minutes into the contest off a corner kick as Kira Maguire played the ball into the 18-yard box and found Kyra Treanor, Treanor's header was able to find the back of the net.
Brown went on to out shoot Central Connecticut State 6-0 for the remainder of the first half, the Bears also generated five more corners following Treanor's. The Blue Devils were held without a shot through the first 45 minutes.
Ella Weil's first-career goal came in the 49th minute as she launched a left-footed shot into the top-left corner of the net, giving Brown a 2-0 advantage. Following the goal, the Bears continued to apply pressure as they generated six corner kicks in the final 41 minutes of the contest.
In total, the Bears out shot the Blue Devils 15-1, Brown earned 12 corner kicks while holding Central Connecticut State to three.
Bella Schopp made her lone save of the contest in the 57th minute, the junior earned her ninth-career shutout in the win. Kira Maguire picked up her first assist of the season and the seventh of her career.
"I thought there were a lot of momentum shifts in the first half," McNeill added. "I thought our speed of play was too slow in the first half and we were playing around with the ball in the back. Soccer is a game of chances and we wanted to get the ball in the final third and create more chances and pin them in more. I thought we did that better in the second half, all in all it's a good win."
Brown will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 12 when they take on Minnesota at 1:00 p.m.
