Softball Sweeps Rhode Island in Midweek Doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (10-17) swept Rhode Island (7-27) in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Brown pitching shutout the Rams in both games and the offense came alive in game two as the Bears won in five innings.
GAME 1: BROWN 1, RHODE ISLAND 0
Macy Borowski threw a gem and Cameron Zytkewicz Ray came up with a clutch double as Brown earned a 1-0 win over Rhode Island.
Borowski threw a complete game, her fifth of the season, and earned the shutout win, holding Rhode Island to just two hits and one walk on the afternoon. The freshman picked up two strikeouts in the win.
Brown totaled four hits with two coming from Zytkewicz Ray. Lily Berlinger and Vanessa Alexander each had a hit for the Bears.
Brown's offense loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with one out but could not get a run across against Rhode Island starter Ashley Hibbard.
In the top of the sixth, Rhode Island picked pa two-out double and after a steal of third, had the go-ahead run 60 feet away. Borowski got out of the inning with a flyout to left.
The Bears finally broke through in the sixth after Berlinger walked to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Zytkewicz Ray laced a double to the wall in right center field and Berlinger scored from first, beating the throw home.
Borowski put the Rams down in order in the seventh to lock up the win.
GAME 2: Brown 8, Rhode Island 0 – 5 innings
The Bears made quick work of Rhode Island in game two, beating the Rams 8-0 in five innings. Jodie Aguirre picked up the win with the complete game shutout, scattering five hits and striking out four.
Four Bears each had two hits on the day with Berlinger, Zytkewicz Ray, English and Rodriguez all delivering for Brown. English finished the game with three RBI.
Brown got things started quickly in game two. Brown took advantage of a walk and an error with a two-out single by English to score both Laurel Moody and Berlinger.
After a double to start the second by Rodriguez, two batters later, Jayme Gross hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Brown's third run of the game. Brown put a fourth run on the board in the third with a double by Zytkewicz Ray that scored Berlinger.
Brown added another run in the fourth with a groundout by Leah Carey that scored Rodriguez. Rodriguez had walked to leadoff the inning, stole second and moved to third on a groundout.
Berlinger started the fifth with a doubled and scored on an error in the next at bat. After a single by Zytkewicz Ray, English doubled to the wall to bring home Brown's seventh run. Alexander grounded out to move English to third and the Bears walked it off as Rodriguez doubled to right to score English.
UP NEXT
Brown will be back on the road for conference play this weekend with a three-game set at Cornell.
