PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball's season came to a dramatic close on Friday (May 8) in the Ivy League Tournament at Princeton University.
Brown began the day beating Harvard 8-2 to stay alive in the tournament. The Bears campaign came to a close in the second game of the day as Brown fell to Columbia in 12 innings, 2-1.
BROWN 8, HARVARD 2
Brown kept its season going with a six-run win over Harvard to start the day behind a solid outing from Macy Borowski and a big sixth inning at the plate.
Borowski threw a complete game, striking out six batters, while allowing just two runs on five hits. After allowing two first-inning runs, Borowski shut down the Crimson, finishing off the final six innings without surrendering a run.
Borowski also did it at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Along with Borowski, Abby Bettencourt, and Lilly Burns each had two hits. Burns also drove in two runs.
After Harvard took the lead with a home run in the first, the Bears started to claw back into the game in the third. With one out, Elli Thompson drew a walk and Bettencourt singled to move Thompson into scoring position. Borowski then hit a line drive to right, past the diving right fielder to plate Brown's first run.
A two-out rally tied the game for the Bears with Reagan Crosthwaite drawing a two-out walk after Thompson walked to start the inning. With Torii Ramirez running at second, Burns singled to right field to make it 2-2.
Brown broke the game open in the sixth inning, sending 13 runners to the plate and scoring six runs. The inning started with a double by Kaicee Klus to left center and Jasmine Hsiao moved Klus to third on a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch and walk loaded the bases before Thompson delivered the big blow, unloading the bases with a double to the wall in left center.
Bettencourt kept the offense going with a triple down the right field line to score Thompson and Borowski drove in Brown's seventh run of the game with a double off the wall in left center to score Bettencourt. A single up the middle by Burns closed out the scoring in the inning.
Borowski sat the Crimson down in order to end the game, striking out two batters, including the final batter of the game.
COLUMBIA 2, BROWN 1 – 12 innings
The Bears season came to a heartbreaking close as Brown dropped a 12-inning game to Columbia 2-1. Edie Cobb was stellar for the Bears throwing 11.1 innings and allowing just the two runs, while striking out five.
In the longest game Brown has played since a 14-inning game in 2016, the Bears could not break through against Ivy League Pitcher of the Year Mads Lawson as Brown picked up just four hits and struck out 12 times.
Columbia took advantage of two walks in the first with a one-out double to score the first run of the game, but Cobb would keep the Lions scoreless over the next 11 innings, stranding 12 baserunners while giving the Bears a chance to get back into the game.
In the top of the fourth, Brown started the inning with Amanda Deng getting hit by a pitch. With two outs, Macy Borowski drew a walk and Lilly Burns tied the game with a single to right. After the throw home was wide, Cobb, who was running for Borowski, broke home but was thrown out to keep the game tied.
Brown would get runners in scoring position three more times but were held at bay by Lawson.
In the bottom of the 12th, three-straight one-out singles loaded the bases before a walk brought home the winning run.
