WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Five runs down the stretch helped the Yale baseball team top Brown by a score of 6-1 in the rubber game of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
Quinn Rooks had an RBI single and an outfield assist. Reece Rappoli doubled and scored a run for Brown, while Gunner Boree and Charles Crawford also picked up hits. Catcher Andrew Hanlon threw out two runners attempting to steal second. On the mound, Santhosh Gottam allowed four earned runs over 7.0 innings without issuing a walk.
After narrowing beating out two potential double play balls in the infield, Yale took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, scoring on a bunt single and throwing error.
Brown sent the minimum to the plate through the first four innings before breaking through with back-to-back hits with two outs in the fifth. Rappoli started the rally by lining a double to left center field and came in to score when Rooks lined an RBI single to left field.
After giving up the second inning run, Gottam settled in and retired eight batters in a row and 10-of-11 at one point spanning the second to the fifth innings.
Yale began to pull away with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Following a two-run homer in the sixth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with nobody out and used a two-run double to plate two more runs. A potential third run on the play was cut down at the plate as Rooks, Dillehay and Hanlon teamed up on the relay.
A leadoff solo home run in the eighth plated Yale's final run.
Yale pitching locked down the win by setting down the final seven batters in a row to end the game.
Brown will hit the road for the final time in 2024 on Tuesday evening with a visit to Holy Cross for a non-league matchup. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
