McDadi Nets Overtime Winner on Opening Night for Women's Hockey
10/13/2023 9:10:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore India McDadi buried an overtime game winner to lift Brown women's hockey to a 4-3 victory over Holy Cross in its opener on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.

McDadi's OT winner was her second of the night. Joining her with goals for the Bears (1-0-0) were sophomores Ellie Gauvin and Jade Iginla. Scoring for the Crusaders (0-3-0) were sophomores Alexia Moreau and Alexis Perry twice.

Senior goalie Kaley Doyle finished with 20 saves to earn her first win of the season.

"I thought we played really well," said Head Coach Melanie Ruzzi. "Offensively we were strong and defensively we were strong but got puck focused to let them back in the game. Systematically we were strong and we had good pace and puck movement. We have depth in our lineup so seeing more players this year than we have had in the past is a good thing, so it's a great start."

The Bears took full advantage of a five-minute power play in the first period to make it a quick 2-0 lead.

Senior Anna Shelden and freshman Ava DeCoste first set up Gauvin for a blue-line strike for the first goal of the year at 13:34. Seconds later at 13:42, Iginla received an assist from senior Cameron Sikich and took it coast-to-coast for her first of the year and 18th career goal.

Moreau from Holy Cross would score just before the first intermission from sophomore Casey Borgiel to make it a 2-1 game.

It only took 3:36 into the second for McDadi to make it a 3-1 Brown advantage. Fellow second-years Iginla and Gauvin set McDadi up with the assists for her first of the year.

That score would stand until just over two minutes remaining in the game. Perry scored twice with less than three minutes left in regulation to force overtime.
It only took 26 seconds into OT for McDadi to turn defense into offense and go the length of the ice for her second of the game and the winner.

Brown and Holy Cross face off again in Worcester on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
