Women's Hockey Settles for Weekend Split with Overtime Loss at Holy Cross
10/14/2023 9:19:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brown Bears (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) and Holy Cross Crusaders (1-3-0, 0-0-0 HEA) went to overtime for the second straight night, but it was the Crusaders who took the 2-1 victory Saturday night at the Hart Center.
"Tonight's game was a much more complete game from both sides with chances going both ways," said head coach Melanie Ruzzi. "We will invest time in solving the 5v6 situation to close out games. Rory played very well in her first start of her college career. We will be ready for league play right away next weekend."
Elodie Roy tallied her first career goal with 4:22 remaining in the opening period with a wrist shot from the point that deflected through traffic to beat Holy Cross goalie Madison Beck (23 saves). Margot Norehad picked up the assist on the goal.
The Bears controlled the second period and held a 14-2 edge in shots on goal, but could not extend the one-goal lead as Beck turned aside all 14 shots faced.
Brown goalie Rory Edwards recorded 11 of her 20 saves in the third period as the Crusaders looked to tie the game. The Schomberg, Ontario finished the night with 20 saves.
With Beck pulled for the extra attacker, the Crusaders tied the game with 1:43 remaining in regulation as Millie Sirum found a net-front rebound to force overtime.
Sirum found the back of the net 2:40 into overtime for her second goal of the night to give the Crusaders the 2-1 win.
Brown finished the game with a 24-22 edge in shots on goal. Neither team found the net on the power play with the Bears finishing 0-for-5 and the Crusaders finishing 0-for-4.
Brown opens ECAC play next weekend on the road to take on eighth-ranked Quinnipiac on Friday (Oct. 20) and Princeton on Saturday (Oct. 21). Both games are set to begin at 6 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
