INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Freshman Nathan Brasher reached base twice in his collegiate debut, going 1-for-3 with a walk out of the third spot in the batting order.
- Gunner Boree doubled leading off the eighth inning and scored the Bears only run.
- Jackson Hipp picked up his first career RBI on a sac fly.
- Zach Fogell allowed four earned runs and struck out four over four innings in his second career start.
- Junior Bobby Olsen tossed four innings of relief for the Bears, allowing two earned runs on two hits while striking out three.
- Five of the Tigers eight runs came after two outs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Memphis put two runners on with nobody out in each of the first two innings, but Fogell bore down and struck out two to get through the first inning, then used consecutive ground balls and a run down to keep the game scoreless through two innings.
- The Tigers jumped on the board in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of two Brown errors and pushing across a pair of unearned runs on a double, and a two-out single to take a 2-0 lead.
- Memphis broke the game open with four more runs in the fourth inning, all coming with two outs. After two quick flyouts, the Tigers strung together four straight hits with a double, RBI single, another single, and a three-run homer to right field by Jacob Compton to extend the lead to 6-0.
- Memphis took advantage of two walks to begin the fifth, and used an RBI double to tack on two more runs to lead it 8-0.
- Memphis starter Conor Shamblin and reliever Landon Gartman combined to retire 17 consecutive Bears before Brasher drew a one-out walk in the seventh.
- Brown got on the board in the eighth inning when Boree doubled to right field leading off, went to third on a wild pitch and scored one batter later on a sac fly by Hipp.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: GRANT ACHILLES
- "There was a lot of energy and I think our players did a good job of keeping the energy the entire game. There were a lot of firsts for a lot of guys. There is a lot to build on and I think it was great to be back out there again."
- "Bobby (Olsen) threw it well at times. He had to settle in a bit but limited the damage and was able to settle into a groove. The pitcher we saw towards the end of his outing is what we have seen from him, and it was good to see that."
- "I thought Memphis played well tonight. Any time you have a good team with their ace on the mound, you don't want to give them opportunities. With those free passes and extra bases, we kind of shot ourselves in the foot for that short stretch, but I was proud of how our guys responded and didn't let it beat them down mentally. It'll be good to get back out there tomorrow be closer to the better version of ourselves."
