PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team fell by a score of 7-3 to Northeastern in a midweek non-league matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
The Brown offense was held to just two hits through the first seven innings, and Northeastern, who entered game leading the CAA in stolen bases, swiped 11 bags on 15 attempts in the game. Senior Mika Petersen had two hits and an RBI, sophomore Christian Butera had an RBI double, and senior Logan Meusy scored two runs. On the mound, sophomore Bryan Yang allowed just one unearned run over 3.2 innings of relief.
The Huskies got on the board quickly in the top of the first with a pair of runs, taking advantage of a walk and hit batter, followed by an RBI ground out and a fielder's choice.
The Bears loaded the bases in the third inning with a pair of walks and a hit batsman, but left the bases loaded without scoring.
Brown took advantage of three Northeastern errors to plate a run in the fourth inning. After a pair of errors, Petersen lined a single the other way into left field to score Meusy from second to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Northeastern got the run right back in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a single and pair of throwing errors to get the lead back to two. They grabbed another insurance run in the seventh, putting two on with nobody out before a run scored on a ground ball double play to push it to 4-1.
The game opened up in the eighth inning as NU scored two more runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead. The first run scored on a safety squeeze, and the second came on a single through the right side.
Brown put up a fight in the eighth inning and pulled within 6-3 with two runs on three hits. DJ Dillehay drew a walk, Petersen dropped down a bunt base hit, and Butera followed by lacing a double down the left field line to score both runners.
Northeastern got a run back in the top of the ninth courtesy of a one-out walk and a sac fly.
The Bears will open up Ivy League play this weekend with a three-game series at Yale. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 11:30 a.m. from George H.W. Bush '48 Field in West Haven, Conn.
