INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Making his first career start on the mound, junior righthander Tobey McDonough turned in a strong 6.0 inning effort for Brown, allowing no runs on just five hits while striking out eight. He also issued just one walk.
- Senior Jackson Hipp picked up his second RBI in as many games on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning, and also added an outfield assist by throwing the tying run out at the plate in the seventh inning.
- The Bears put runners on base in eight of the nine innings, but went 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-17 with men on base, while Memphis was 2-for-6 with RISP.
- Charles Crawford and Gunner Boree each went 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Brown stole three bases on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears left one runner on base in each of the first four innings, and two more in the fifth before breaking through in the sixth.
- Brown loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth courtesy of a hit batter, a single and a walk. Hipp came up to the plate and put the Bears in front on a fielder's choice grounder to third, before Memphis limited the damage with a fly ball and ground out.
- McDonough struck out two batters in both the third and fifth innings, while retiring the side in order. Coming back out for the sixth, he allowed a pair of singles and a wild pitch that put runners on second and third with two outs, before getting a big strikeout to end the inning and his outing.
- Memphis went to work against the Brown bullpen in the bottom of the seventh, using two walks to put two on with one out. A single to right field looked like it would tie the game, but Hipp came up throwing and hosed the runner at the plate to keep it a 1-0 game.
- Memphis then tied the game two batters later on an error in the infield, and took the lead on a wild pitch. They added an insurance run on a double steal attempt of second and home, with the runner from first staying in a rundown long enough for the Tigers to score the runner from third.
- Brown went down fighting in the ninth, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with one out after a pair of walks, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: GRANT ACHILLES
- "Tobey competed and gave us a chance. Those six innings was a great performance for him. He was attacking the hitters all day long and was able to give us a shot."
- "It's a credit to Memphis and credit of us not cashing in. It's not for a lack of effort. We applied pressure today which was a positive. We need to keep putting ourselves in those situations, but just need to push it across the goal line."
- "We haven't played a complete game yet, but we're moving in the right direction. I saw more positives than negatives today, but we're not where we want to be right now. As long as we keep moving forward, that's a positive we can take, but we certainly expect a higher level of play moving forward."
