Men's Hockey Readies for Valentine's Day Battle with Colgate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (6-16-1, 6-10-1 ECAC), fresh off a win over Dartmouth, host the Colgate Raiders (12-14-3, 7-7-3 ECAC) tomorrow evening in a Valentine's Day showdown at Meehan Auditorium.
Monday's game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+ in the United States and Stretch Internet internationally.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
- Brown enters Monday with a 6-16-1 overall record and 6-10-1 conference mark. The Bears sit ninth in the standings with 20 league points and are just five points behind fifth-place Colgate.
- The Bears captured a 3-2 road win at Dartmouth Friday (Feb. 11) to complete the season sweep over the Big Green. Brown is 2-2-1 in its last five games and plays its eighth game in 18 days Monday. Following the game, Brown finishes the regular season with a home weekend against Rensselaer (Feb. 18) and Union (Feb. 19) and a road weekend at St. Lawrence (Feb. 25) and Clarkson (Feb. 26).
- Senior forward Justin Jallen leads the team in goals (7), points (13), and shots (55). Defenseman Samuli Niinisaari leads the team with eight assists and is tied for second on the team with nine points alongside Tristan Crozier (3-6-9), Jake Harris (3-6-9), Luke Krys (2-7-9), and Michael Maloney (6-3-9).
- Between the pipes, Mathieu Caron holds a 2.97 goals against average and .908 save percentage in 16 starts. He holds a 5-10-1 record along with two shutouts.
- Colgate enters Monday with a 12-14-3 overall record and 7-7-3 ECAC mark. The Raiders sit fifth in the conference standings with 25 points, four points behind fourth-place Cornell and five points ahead of ninth-place Brown.
- The Raiders are red-hot of late, with a 4-0-1 mark in their last five games with wins over Rensselaer (Feb. 12), Union (Feb. 11), Cornell (Feb. 4), and Dartmouth (Jan. 29).
- Colgate's season has been defined by streaks, beginning the campaign with four straight wins and a 5-1-0 mark and entering Monday 4-0-1 in the last five. The Raiders have also lost five straight games twice, including a nine-game winless streak (Nov. 20-Jan. 29).
- Colgate's offense ranks fifth in the conference and 28th in the NCAA with 2.93 goals per game.
- Colton Young leads the team with 13 goals, 24 points, and 96 shots. Matt Verboon leads the Raiders with 17 assists. Including Young, four Raiders have 20 or more points and another seven skaters have 10 or more points.
- Defensively, Colgate ranks sixth in the ECAC and tied for 32nd in the NCAA, allowing 3.00 goals per game. Mitch Benson leads holds a 2.72 goals against average and .912 save percentage in nine starts. Carter Gylander holds a 2.76 goals against average and .908 save percentage in 15 starts.
- Monday evening marks the 97th meeting between Brown and Colgate in a series dating back to 1935. Brown holds a 27-61-8 overall record and 16-23-4 home record in the series
- Brown's win over Dartmouth sealed a 5-5-0 Ivy season for the Bears in 2021-22, the third .500 or better season under head coach Brendan Whittet.
- It marked the fourth such season since 1998-99 and just the 16th such season in the last 47 years.
- Whittet joins a quartet former Brown coaches with three or more such seasons: James Fullerton (8), Bob Gaudet (5), Richard Toomey (4), and Roger Grillo (3).
- With wins over Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Yale this season, the 2021-22 Brown Bears are the first team since the 1994-95 squad to beat those four opponents in the same season.
- This year's team is just the third Brown team in the last 44 seasons to accomplish the feat and the eighth team since Cornell was added to the schedule 62 seasons ago (1958-59).
