Men's Hockey Skates to 1-1 Tie with Colgate on Valentine's Day

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (6-16-2, 6-10-2 ECAC) skated to their second straight home tie Monday evening against the Colgate Raiders (12-14-4, 7-7-4 ECAC). Tristan Crozier scored for the Bears and Mathieu Caron recorded 24 saves.
"I thought we played a really complete game against a really good hockey team; they have some good offensive players who can put it in the back of the net if you make a mistake," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I was happy with how we played, but we have to find a way to score, not to generate because we had plenty of good chances, but to find a way to deposit those Grade A chances we have. The positive is we got a point tonight, our goal is to be on home-ice for the playoff and we're close, it's going to be a battle right down to the last game. Every point is important, we got one tonight in the tie and thought we played really good hockey."
Crozier put the Bears ahead 6:54 into the opening period with his fourth of the season. After a neutral zone faceoff win, Luke Albert moved the puck across the ice to Samuli Niinisaari, who fired the puck down the right dasher. As Colgate goaltender Mitch Benson (30 saves) retreated behind his net to stop the puck, the puck caromed to the net-front, where Crozier finished before a diving Benson could recover.
Colgate's Josh McKechney tied the game with just two seconds left in the opening frame, tipping a point shot from Alex Young through traffic to beat Caron. Brown challenged the play for high-sticking, but a video review confirmed the goal.
Brown held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal in a scoreless second period. The best chance for either side came off the stick of Colgate's Griffin Lunn halfway through the frame, but his shot struck iron.
With the score still tied entering the third, Brown out-shot Colgate 8-6 in the frame. However, neither team could find the go-ahead goal with the Bears coming up empty on a one-minute 5-on-3 opportunity and the Raiders coming up empty on a late power play opportunity.
The Bears maintained possession in the 3-on-3 format for most of the five-minute overtime period and had two golden chances at the game-winner. Luke Krys cut to the net in the first minute of the overtime frame and Justin Jallen had a great chance halfway into overtime following a faceoff win, but Benson stood tall for both stops and finished OT with five saves.
In the shootout, Colgate's Levi Glasman was the lone scorer, giving the Raiders the extra league point with the shootout win.
GAME NOTES
Brown will recognize its six seniors and one graduate student on Saturday.
