Men's Hockey Completes Season Sweep Over Dartmouth with 3-2 Road Win
2/11/2022 11:13:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
HANOVER, N.H. – The Brown Bears (6-16-1, 6-10-1 ECAC) completed the season sweep over the Dartmouth Big Green (3-17-3, 2-12-2 ECAC) Friday night at Thompson Arena, claiming a 3-2 road win to pick up three ECAC league points and a 5-5-0 record against Ivy opponents.
"I thought the guys played a really good game from start to finish; the game was tight but we didn't panic and I thought that we had a really good third period," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "It's a big win, a big Ivy win that puts us at .500, and the win puts us within striking distance of home ice in the playoffs. We're excited to play on Monday and see where we can go with that game."
Senior Michael Maloney put the Bears on the board 3:25 into the game, tipping a point shot from junior James Crossman past Dartmouth goaltender Clay Stevenson (27 saves). Senior Jake Harris pressured Dartmouth's defense on the forecheck and won the corner battle, moving the puck to Crossman at the point for the quick shot and score.
Sophomore Jordan Tonelli doubled Brown's lead 1:40 into the second period, scooping a pass from Samuli Niinisaari in the neutral zone before racing down the right side of the ice, cutting to the slot in the Dartmouth zone, and wiring a wrist shot past Stevenson.
The Big Green cut into Brown's lead quickly as Sean Chisholm scored his sixth of the season 4:14 into the middle frame. Chisholm skated down the left side of the ice on a 2-on-1 odd-man rush, and rifled a quick shot under Mathieu Caron's (29 saves) blocker.
Thomas Manty tallied his third goal of the season 15:24 into the second to give the Bears a 3-1 lead. The Andover, Massachusetts native forced a Dartmouth turnover at the offensive blue line and Lynden Grandberg picked up the loose puck and found Manty cutting to the net, who sniped a wrist shot over Stevenson's blocker from the right dot.
Jeff Losurdo cut Brown's lead back to one goal with a power play goal 5:45 into the third period. Nick Unrah received a pass from Tanner Palocsik at the top of the left circle and blasted a centering pass to the slot, where Losurdo redirected the puck past Caron.
Dartmouth pressed offensively in the final 14:15 of the third period looking for the equalizer, but Caron and the Brown defense stood tall to preserve the one-goal lead and eventual victory.
Freshman defenseman Brett Bliss had a highlight play with 5:10 remaining, hitting the ice to break up a 2-on-1 Big Green rush.
Dartmouth head coach Reid Cashman pulled Stevenson in the final minutes for the extra attacker, but Brown held Dartmouth to just one shot in the stretch with crucial faceoff wins from captain Tristan Crozier.

GAME NOTES
- With the victory tonight, Brown finishes the 2021-22 Ivy slate with a 5-5-0 record, marking the fourth time since the 1998-99 season and the 16th time in the last 47 seasons the Bears have finished the Ivy schedule with a .500 or better mark. It's the third such season for Whittet, who joins a quartet of former Brown coaches with three or more .500 or better seasons against Ivy opponents since 1960: James Fullerton (8), Bob Gaudet (5), Richard Toomey (4), and Roger Grillo (3).
- With wins over Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Yale this season, the 2021-22 Bears are the first Brown team to beat those four opponents in a single season since 1994-95.
- Harris set a career-high with five shots on goal and Bliss matched a career-high with five shots on goal against the Big Green.
- Dartmouth finished with a 31-30 edge in shots on goal and a 32-27 lead in faceoffs won. The Big Green also blocked 12 shots compared to 10 for Brown. On special teams, Dartmouth was 1-for-2 on the power play with Brown finishing 0-for-3.
- Maloney's goal 3:25 into the game marked the second-fastest goal for the Bears this season. Bliss scored 52 seconds into Brown's home game against Princeton (Nov. 5).
- Friday also marked a homecoming of sorts for Whittet, as the Brown boss spent 11 seasons (1998-2009) as an assistant under Bob Gaudet before taking his current role prior to the 2009-10 season.
