Men's Hockey Drops Non-Conference Finale Against LIU Sunday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Jordan Tonelli tallied his first career goal halfway through the third period to tie the game at 3-3, but LIU's Billy Jerry scored his fourth of the game with 11 seconds remaining to lift the LIU Sharks (7-14-3, Independent) to a non-conference win over the Brown Bears (4-14-0, 3-8-0 ECAC) Sunday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
The Sharks took the early lead as Jerry scored his seventh of the season on the power play 13:59 into the opening period. Spencer Cox found Jerry with a pass at the top of the right circle, whose wrist shot beat Brown goaltender Luke Kania (19 saves).
After a five-minute major and game misconduct was assessed to LIU's PJ Marrocco seconds into the middle period, Michael Maloney scored his fifth goal of the season 3:37 into the period to tie the game. Luke Krys hit Maloney with a pass at the bottom of the left circle, and a centering effort from Maloney deflected off a LIU defenseman and past goaltender Vincent Purpura (24 saves).
In the waning seconds of Brown's extended power play, Jerry scored his second of the afternoon to put the Sharks back on top 5:07 into the period. A 2-on-1 LIU rush saw Nolan Welsh move the puck across the slot to Jerry for the one-timer goal.
The Sharks doubled the lead 72 seconds later as Jerry completed the hat trick, scoring on a partial breakaway on a quick zone entry with assists from Jordan Di Cocco and Carter Ekberg.
Nathan Plessis brought Brown back within a goal 6:42 into the middle period and just 23 seconds after Jerry's third goal. Justin Jallen carried the puck behind the LIU net and centered a pass to Plessis on the doorstep for the junior's third goal of the season.
Tonelli tied the game 10:54 into the third frame, rifling a wrist shot from the slot past Purpura to make it 3-3. Matt Sutton and Tonelli entered the LIU zone with speed on a 2-on-1 rush following a breakout pass from Lynden Grandberg for the equalizing goal.

- Brown finished the game with a 27-23 edge in shots on goal. LIU went 2-for-4 on the power play compared to Brown's 1-for-7 output. The Sharks also won 28-of-51 faceoffs and blocked 11 shots to Brown's 10 blocks.
