Men's Hockey Claims 2-1 ECAC Win over 11th-Ranked Cornell Tuesday
2/1/2022 6:14:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Mathieu Caron recorded 32 saves, including 16 in the third period, as the Brown Bears (5-14-0, 5-8-0 ECAC) captured a 2-1 home win over the 11th-ranked Cornell Big Red 13-5-3, 8-3-3 ECAC) Tuesday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
"It was a tremendous win over an elite-level team and it was a good response from our team in terms of coming back after a tough loss on Sunday," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "It wasn't perfect, but we found a way, had good goaltending, and a will to win from the team; it was great to see. I thought we played Brown Hockey the way I want it to be played – with grit, tenacity, enthusiasm, and zest for a full 60 minutes. It puts us in a pretty good position in the League, we have to keep rolling with a good team coming in on Friday."
Brown senior Jake Harris tallied his second of the season on the power play 14:16 into the first period for the afternoon's first goal. Nathan Plessis found Tristan Crozier at the bottom of the left circle, who then went across the slot to Harris at the bottom of the right circle for the one-timer.
Jonny Russell nearly doubled Brown's lead six minutes into the second period, ripping a quick shot off a Brown face-off win past Cornell goaltender Ian Shane (21 saves) but it rang iron and deflected into the corner.
The Big Red nearly tied the game seven minutes into the middle frame as a net-front scramble saw the puck dance along the goal line before Caron (32 saves) swatted it to safety. A video review at the ensuing stoppage of play confirmed the call on the ice.
Justin Jallen scored his sixth of the season with 3:45 remaining in the third period to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Crozier hit Nathan Plessis with a breakout pass and the junior found Jallen streaking through the neutral zone for a breakaway, where the St. Paul, Minnesota native deked to his left and slid the puck through Shane's legs.
Just over a minute later, Cornell's Ondrej Psenicka buried a loose puck from the slot to cut into Brown's lead. A scramble in front and initial shot from Kyle Betts was stopped, but Psenicka fought through traffic for his 10th goal of the season.
Shane was pulled from the Cornell net for the extra attacker as the Big Red looked for the equalizer in the final 2:41 of the third. However, Caron recorded four saves and the Bears blocked five shots, including a critical block from Cole Quisenberry with less than 20 seconds until the final horn.

Both games will stream on ESPN+ in the United States and through Stretch Internet internationally.
