PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team lost to Providence 2-1 Thursday evening.
The Bears led 1-0 at the half, but ended up falling after the Friars were able to find the back of the net twice during the second 45.
"Obviously a disappointing result tonight," head coach Kia McNeill said. "I think we did enough to win the game, but unfortunately didn't capitalize on the chances we generated and Providence did. When you are playing good teams, that can be the difference. Luckily, we have another game this weekend so we have to grow from this and bounce back for Sunday."
Maesyn G'Bye lined up for a free kick in the 17th minute and after the ball bounced around inside the six-yard box, a charging Rebecca Rosen put her head down and forced the ball into the open net.
Despite controlling play for the majority of the first half, the Bears weren't able to add to their lead.
Providence's leading scorer Meg Hughes would tie the game in the 62nd minute after a ball took an awkward deflection in the box and Hughes was in just the right place to flick it home. Hannah McNulty gave the Friars the lead just eight minutes later and it would prove to be the game-winner.
The Bears were able to created multiple quality scoring chances during the final 15 minutes, but an Ava Seelenfreund shot was saved by the Providence keeper, and chances by Kayla Duran and Zoe Maxwell went just wide.
On the night, the Friars outshot the Bears 17-14, but Brown held the edge in shots on goal 9-5. The Bears also earned more corners with seven to Providence's four.
Brown will have one more tune up before Ivy League play starts when Northeastern comes to Providence for a 1 p.m. matchup this Sunday, Sept. 19.
