PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team defeated Northeastern 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears scored twice in the first half and added one more in the second to improve to 4-0 on the year at home.
"We talked a lot about closing this chapter on a high," head coach Kia McNeill said. "Obviously, Northeastern is a really good team, and for us to take care of them is a really good thing just to build momentum going into Ivy League play.
"We have different threats up top which is great to see. Miya scored two great goals, Brittany put one in, we even could have had a couple more. This week we'll get some rest and recovery and just get ready for Dartmouth."
Miya Grant-Clavijo led the way for Bears with her first multi-goal game of her collegiate career as she picked up two on the afternoon. Brittany Raphino scored one of her own and also assisted on the first goal of the game. Zoe Maxwell and Gianna De Priest each recorded an assist as well.
Grant-Clavijo started her big day in the sixth minute when she cleaned up the rebound on a Brittany Raphino shot to give Brown the lead.
In the 30th minute, Grant-Clavijo added her second goal of the day after some beautiful passing from Ava Seelenfreund and Zoe Maxwell freed her up right in front of the goal and the freshman was able to tap it in around the goalie with her left foot.
Northeastern got one back in the 64th minute when the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick. Katherine Marchesseault stepped up and hit it off the crossbar and into the goal to make it 2-1.
Raphino would ice the game for the home team in the 70th minute when De Priest sent a long ball over the top of the defense. The junior brought the ball into the box and beat the goalie with a low, hard shot.
The final 20 minutes of the game were relatively uneventful as Brown was able to hold on to the two-goal lead for the win.
On the day, the Bears held the advantage in shots 13-9 and corners 6-3. Kayla Thompson made five saves in goal.
Brown will now turn its attention to Ivy League play. The Bears host Dartmouth this Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
