PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team defeated Holy Cross 4-0 Sunday afternoon in the team's first home game since Nov. 16, 2019.
The Bears, who improve to 1-1 on the year, followed up their season-opening loss at Hofstra with a four-goal showing of their own against the Crusaders, who fall to 0-4.
"I thought it was a great game," head coach Kia McNeill said. "We talked a lot in pregame about resetting, forgetting about Friday, moving forward and setting the tone early in this game. We created a lot of chances, had 34 shots, 14 on goal, and obviously put four of them away.
"I think the scary part with this team is we can generate even more chances and be more productive in the final third. It's definitely a good starting point. To get the clean sheet is great. I think today is more of a reflection of this team and the potential we have."
The Bears put pressure on the Crusader back line from the very first minute of action and it paid off with Brittany Raphino's first goal of the season in the 18th minute. Ava Seelenfreund sent a hard, low cross into the box that the Holy Cross goalie was able to deflect away, but it fell to a waiting Raphino who sent it into the bottom left corner to take the lead.
Maesyn G'Bye got on the scoresheet in the 27th minute when she lined up for a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. She curled a left-footed strike into the far top corner to double the lead.
Miya Grant-Clavijo and Zoe Maxwell combined in the 40th minute to make the game 3-0 and cap the scoring for the first half. Brown added its fourth and final goal in the 47th minute, this time a 20-yard strike from Seelenfreund, assisted by Kayla Duran.
On the day, the Bears fully outplayed the Crusaders, putting up 34 shots to the Crusaders' four. Brown also earned 12 corner kicks to Holy Cross' two.
Up next for Brown is a home matchup with the University of Rhode Island this Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
