PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team defeated Rhode Island 3-1 Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears, who improve to 2-1 on the year, scored all three goals in the first half. The Rams, who fall to 0-2-1, would answer back in the second with their lone goal, but the deficit was too large to come back from.
"A lot of our girls have put in a lot of minutes on the field," head coach Kia McNeill said. "I think we saw some heavy legs in the second half that allowed URI to get a little more of the run of the play. But I think all in all it was a good effort and we scored some great goals. I'm proud of the team and how we've been playing."
Brittany Raphino got the scoring going early when she recorded her second goal of the year in just the seventh minute of action. Lexi Quinn lined up to take a free kick just a few yards into the Ram's half of the field and sent it soaring into the 18-yard box. Kayla Duran got her head to it and flicked it on to Raphino who beat the URI goalie hard to the left.
Miya Grant-Clavijo doubled the lead when she and Raphino went on a two-on-one in the 30th minute. Raphino moved the ball around a defender and Grant-Clavijo did the rest.
Quinn added a goal of her own late in the first half when Sheyenne Allen sent a ball skidding through the box from the left flank. Evelyn Calhoon had a chance to take a touch at the penalty spot, but she let it go all the way to Quinn who was able to run onto it and let a hard, low shot fly into the bottom left corner of the net. It was Quinn's first collegiate goal.
After a busy first half, the second 45 featured only one goal and this time, by the Rams. On a rare counter opportunity for URI, Tali O'Leary received a pass from Rebecca D'Anna at the top of the box and looped it over Thompson to make the game 3-1. That was where the scoring would end.
Up next for the Bears is Oklahoma State this Sunday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
