Jallen Scores Twice as Men's Hockey Falls at Yale to Split Season Series
12/10/2021 10:05:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Justin Jallen scored two power play goals for the Bears, but it was not enough as the Yale Bulldogs (3-7-0, 2-6-0 ECAC) took a 4-3 win over the Brown Bears (3-9-0, 3-6-0 ECAC) to split the season series Friday night at Ingalls Rink.
Much like the season-opener between Brown and Yale, tonight's game saw 36 combined penalty minutes. Brown finished the night 2-for-4 on the power play while Yale finished the night 0-for-7 in man-up situations.
"It was a game that delved into specialty teams and they were a little better than we were in some of those situations," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We had two five-minute majors called on them and we have to find a way to generate more on the power play and capitalize on those situations. But on the flip side we were short-handed seven times, we can't be short seven times in a game. The majority of that game was played on special teams and we would rather play 5-on-5 hockey."
Jallen gave the Bears an early lead with a power play goal 7:09 into the first period with a quick shot from the top of the right circle to beat Yale goaltender Nathan Reid (23 saves). After killing two penalties early, Brown went to the power play on a Briggs Gammill slashing minor. Jackson Munro received the puck at the top of the zone and quick puck movement from Munro to Luke Krys to Jallen led to the senior's second goal in as many games.
Yale freshman Kieran O'Hearn tied the game 16:18 into the opening period, firing a blue line shot through a screen that snuck through Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron (9 saves).
Jallen added his second power play goal of the night 36 seconds into the second period in the midst of Brown's first five-minute power play. Krys hit Tristan Crozier with a pass at the left post and the captain whipped the puck across the slot to Jallen on the right post.
Niklas Allain tied the game at 2-2 at 2:07 of the second with a short-handed goal. The freshman came down the left boards with speed and rifled a shot near-side to beat Caron's blocker.
Ryan Stevens gave Yale a 3-2 lead 3:19 into the middle frame with a backhand shot from the slot. Luke Kania (21 saves) replaced Caron between the pipes following Stevens' goal.
Yale's Ian Carpentier was assessed a five-minute major and misconduct for slew footing at 17:28 of the second, the Bulldogs' second major and game misconduct of the night.
Brett Bliss rang iron from the top of the right circle with 14.2 seconds remaining in the middle period as the Bulldogs went into the third clinging to a 3-2 lead.
Graham Lillibridge made it 4-2 Bulldogs 4:29 into the third period as William Dineen hit Lillibridge with a stretch pass through the neutral zone for a partial breakaway on Kania.
Bliss found the back of the net with 2:00 remaining in the third period from the right dot. With Kania pulled for the extra attacker, Jake Harris stretched a pass across the zone to Bliss for the defenseman's second goal of the season. Samuli Niinisaari added the secondary assist on the goal.
A late push following the Bliss goal came up short as the Bulldogs held on for a 4-3 win.
"Ultimately, we have to re-group, get some of our injured guys back after break, and we have to make sure our energy levels remain consistent when we play a 60-minute game and avoid ebbs and flows," Whittet concluded.
