14th-Ranked Providence Claims 35th Annual Mayor's Cup Over Men's Hockey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 14th-ranked Providence Friars (11-5-0, 6-3-0 HEA) took a 4-0 win over the Brown Bears (1-7-0, 1-6-0 ECAC) on Saturday night to claim the 35th annual Mayor's Cup at Meehan Auditorium.
"A loss is a loss but I thought we battled hard and I thought we played with intensity," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I would like us to play together a little more, I think sometimes when we get down we have a tendency to be very individualistic and that's not going to allow us to be successful over time. It's still early, we play to win every game. We're not where we want to be but we'll continue to work and again you always gain knowledge so we learned something tonight."
The Friars jumped to the early lead as Rhode Island native Brett Berard scored his tenth goal of the season at the 6:17 mark of the first period with an assist from Guillaume Richard. Berard added a pair of assists in the game to finish with three points.
Providence added a pair of goals in the second period as Nick Poisson tallied his fifth of the season 1:27 into the middle frame and Patrick Moynihan buried his sixth goal of the season at 4:22 of the period. Moynihan's marker came on the power play as PC went 1-for-2 on its man-up opportunities.
Brown had a pair of power play opportunities in the second period with some offensive chances, but Providence goaltender Austin Cain (24 saves) turned aside all seven shots faced on Brown's power play chances to preserve the shutout in his first start of the season.
Riley Duran tipped a point shot from Davis Bunz past Brown goaltender Luke Kania (42 saves) at 8:03 of the third period for Providence's fourth and final goal.
"We have to come out next week, we have league points on the line. We have to make some hay at home and string together a few wins," Whittet added. "I'm not displeased with how hard the guys played, there are things we have to do better, but work ethic and tenacity are not among those."
Brown returns to ECAC conference play next weekend as the Bears host Harvard on Friday (Dec. 3) and Dartmouth on Saturday (Dec. 4). Both games are set to begin at 7 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+. Click here to purchase tickets.
