PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (2-7-0, 2-5-0 ECAC) tallied a pair of third period goals to upend the 17th-ranked Harvard Crimson (5-4-1, 4-2-1 ECAC) Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"I thought defensively our goalie played well and our penalty kill was excellent," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We have to be more disciplined; we can't put elite-level offensive teams on the power play four times. That being said, we found a way to kill them, and Caron gave us an opportunity to go into the third scoreless. I thought we turned it up a bit in the third and found a way to get a win over one of the best teams in our league and the country. That was a good win, we needed to be rewarded for how we played in the majority of the last five games. We had some stretches where we didn't play well over those five games, but by and large I thought we worked extremely hard."
The first 20 minutes went scoreless as Harvard held an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal in the opening frame. Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron (34 saves) was composed from the opening faceoff, limiting second chance opportunities for the Crimson.
Harvard out-shot Brown 12-3 in a scoreless second period behind a pair of power play chances. Caron made four saves on Crimson power plays and the Bears added five blocked shots on the penalty kill in the period.
Brown's best chance of the second period came 16:30 into the frame as Jake Harris picked up a pass entering the Crimson zone and fired on goal as he crashed the net. Harvard goaltender Mitchell Gibson (19 saves) made the save to keep the game scoreless.
Tristan Crozier put the Bears ahead at 11:47 of the third period, banging home a rebound off a blue line shot from Jackson Munro. The captain carried the puck into the Crimson zone and fired an initial shot wide, but Justin Jallen moved the puck along the boards to Munro, whose shot was saved by Gibson with the rebound coming to Crozier in front of the net.
Caron made consecutive saves with five minutes remaining in the third period to preserve the one-goal lead, turning aside shots from John Fusco and Matthew Coronato.
Michael Maloney sealed the win for the Bears with 45 seconds remaining in the third, rifling home an empty-net goal with assists from Cole Quisenberry and Luke Krys.
"I'm a believer if you do the right things habitually, you'll be rewarded, and the reward is wins. I thought the guys played a very intelligent, good game," Whittet concluded.
