ITHACA, N.Y. – Michael Maloney tied the game in the third period to send it to overtime, but Matt Stienburg's second of the night 58 seconds into the extra frame gave ninth-ranked Cornell (6-1-0, 4-1-0 ECAC) a 3-2 win over the Brown Bears (1-3-0, 1-3-0 ECAC) Friday night at Lynah Rink.
Brown picked up one point in the ECAC standings with the overtime loss while Cornell picked up two points with the overtime win.
"I thought it was a great game; it was a big effort for our team in terms of coming back against a top-10 team in the country in a very difficult environment to play in," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I thought we finally took a step forward as a team tonight and we have to continue to take those steps forward. Overall, the team played very well and hard and I was happy with the way we responded being down 2-0 to pick up a league point."
Cornell scored the game's first goal with one minute remaining in the opening period. Stienburg found a loose puck in front of Brown's net off an initial shot from Hank Kempf to tally his fourth goal of the season.
Kyle Penney doubled Cornell's lead 21 seconds into period two, ripping a one-timer from the slot on an odd-man rush off a feed from Jack Malone.
Brown cut into Cornell's lead with a power play goal at the 9:43 mark of the second. Thomas Manty blasted the initial shot from the top of the slot and a net-front battle saw Jake Harris tip the puck to Cole Quisenberry, who finished with his first goal of the season.
The Bears had a pair of subsequent power play chances as Cornell's Kyler Kovich picked up cross-checking and hitting from behind minors. Cornell goaltender Nate McDonald (30 saves) turned aside all four shots faced on the two power plays.
Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron (34 saves) kept the score within one in the final seconds of the middle period, turning aside a breakaway chance from Cornell's Kyle Betts.
Maloney tied the game with 16:23 to play in the third, finding a loose puck in the low slot for his first goal of the season. Luke Albert and Justin Jallen assisted on the goal.
The Bears had a five-minute power play opportunity with 14:33 to play in regulation following an official review that assessed a major and game misconduct to Sebastian Dirven. Brown's best chance came off a Tonelli shot from the right circle, but the puck struck iron and deflected out of play.
Cornell went to the power play with 7:17 remaining in the third, but Caron made a pair of saves and the Bears blocked three shots to keep the gamed tied at 2-2.
With the game knotted at 2-2 with 57 seconds left in regulation, Cornell called timeout ahead of an offensive zone faceoff for the Big Red. Brown call its timeout immediately after and the third period horn eventually sounded to send the game to overtime.
The Big Red found the game-winner on the first shot of the overtime period, as Steinburg fired a one-timer from the top of the left circle for the goal. Max Andreev assisted on the winner, his second helper of the game.
