HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate Raiders (8-7-0, 3-3-0 ECAC) scored two goals in each period to take a 6-0 win over the Brown Bears (1-4-0, 1-4-0 ECAC) Saturday night at the Class of 1965 Arena in ECAC conference play.
"We have a young team with a lot of new faces in the lineup, we have some injuries, but there's no excuse to play like we did in the first two periods of the game," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We have to be much more consistent; we played tremendous hockey against a great opponent in Cornell last night and we came back tonight against a very good opponent who played very good hockey, but we were just off. The season is still young, we're going to continue to coach, learn, and grow. I like the team, I like the make-up of the team, but we have to learn, and it can't be multiple learning experiences, it has to be once, you step off the bus ready to play. We all have to do a better job."
Colgate opened the scoring at the 8:21 mark of the opening frame off a neutral zone turnover by the Bears. Levi Glasman picked off a Brown pass at the red line and carried the puck into the zone, ripping a far-side shot from the left circle over the glove of Mathieu Caron (21 saves).
The Raiders doubled the lead on their second power play chance at the 16:34 mark of the first as Griffin Lunn fired a one-timer from the left dot off a feed from Elliott McDermott.
Alex DiPaolo made it 3-0 at the 2:51 mark of the second period, tipping a centering pass from Matt Verboon through traffic to beat Caron.
Josh McKechney added a fourth Colgate goal on the Raiders' third power play chance of the game at 7:33 of the second. Brown called timeout following the goal and senior Gabriel Vinal (12 saves) relieved Caron between the pipes.
Brown's best chance of the game came off the stick of Brendan Clark with two minutes to play in the second. The freshman beat the last Raider defenseman and flicked a shot that deflected off Colgate goaltender Carter Gylander, but Nic Belpedio swatted the puck out of mid-air before it crossed the goal line.
Lunn and Belpedio scored for the Raiders in the third period to push the Raiders' lead to 6-0.
Brown hits the ice on Tuesday (Nov. 23) to take on #14/16 Harvard (4-2-1, 3-1-1 ECAC) at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Tuesday night's game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
