PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A late second half Providence goal proved to be the dagger as the Brown field hockey team fell to the Friars, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
The first half ended scoreless and Providence controlled the offensive tempo, outshooting Brown 9-0. The Bears kept the Friars off the scoreboard and fought off three-straight penalty corners in the first eight minutes of action. Senior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) ended the half with four saves. Providence concluded the period with five corners while Brown did not have a corner opportunity.
Brown possessed the ball more in the offensive end to start the second but were unable to put a scoring chance together. Providence continued to gain penalty corners, taking four-straight with 8:55 remaining. Hammaker came up with a big stop on the last corner of the sequence to keep the game knotted at zero.
Providence broke the scoreless game at 66:50 by converting on its 13th corner of the day. Allyson Parker registered the tally while Maddie Babineau and Amanda Collins recorded the helpers.
The Bears pulled Hammaker in favor of the extra field player and made a valiant push to tie the contest. Brown was awarded its first penalty corner of the afternoon with 1:33 remaining and senior Rachel Lanouette (Windham, N.H.) put a strike on target that was saved by PC's Lydia Rice.
Brown had another corner right after Lanouette's chance and had a shot by freshman Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) go wide.
Before time expired, the Bears were awarded their third corner and took the play with zero left on the clock. Freshman Keely O'Keefe (Chevy Chase, Md.) took the insertion while senior Maddie Ayles (Westwood, Mass.) set up van Rootselaar, but Providence's Collins was there to provide the defensive save to give the Friars the 1-0 win.
Hammaker finished the game with six saves while Rice ended with two stops. Providence outshot the Bears 7-4 in the second and again held the corner lead at 8-3.
Brown will next fly out to Virginia for a pair of games, playing at William & Mary on Friday, Sept. 7 and competing at Richmond on Sunday, Sept. 9. Friday's game will begin at 6:00 p.m. while Sunday's contest will start at 12:00 p.m.
