WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – It took overtime to settle Friday night's match-up between the Brown field hockey team and William & Mary, with the Tribe coming out on top, scoring the game winner in the second overtime to take the contest 4-3 at Busch Field.
Junior Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) led the Bears' offense with two goals while freshmen Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) and Emma Rosen (Wilton, Conn.) recorded their first collegiate points on assists.
The Bears (1-2) opened the game's scoring soon into the contest as Openshaw netted her second goal of the season at 4:12. The junior redirected a hard strike from van Rootselaar who gained the assist on the play.
Jorja Morgan put the Tribe (2-2) on the board at 21:52 and knotted the game 1-1. Brown regained the lead right back 10 minutes after (21:41) on Openshaw's second of the game and third of the year on a feed from Rosen.
William & Mary again came back to tie the contest (2-2), this time just before the first half came to a close at 34:16 on a goal by Estelle Hughes.
The Tribe held the halftime lead in shots, 8-3, while the Bears had the edge in penalty corners, 2-1.
William & Mary opened the second half action at 45:05 to claim its first lead of the day on Hughes' second goal of the game. The Bears fought back to score the game-tying goal at 55:49 when senior Rachel Lanouette (Windham, N.H.) played in a shot off a corner that sophomore Anagha Nayak's (Ann Arbor, Mich.) redirected in to move the score to 3-3, a score that would stand until the end of regulation.
Brown kept William & Mary off the scoreboard in the first overtime as the Tribe led in shots for the first extra period, 5-0. Openshaw quickly generated a shot for the Bears in the second overtime but it was saved by Kimi Jones.
