NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Brown field hockey team was defeated by Columbia, 4-0, at Columbia Field Hockey Stadium in its Ivy League opener on Saturday. The Lions defense set the tone on the day, allowing just three Brown shots in the contest.
Columbia (4-3, 1-0 Ivy League) took a 1-0 lead late in the opening period as Michelle Thompson put in a rebound following a scramble in front of the net at 27:23. The Lions concluded the half with six penalty corners to the Bears' two, with their tally coming off a corner. Defensively, junior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) came up with six saves in the frame.
Columbia opened the second half with a quick score by Danielle Buttinger to increase its lead to two at 36:19. The Lions went up 4-0 with Maeve Doherty converting on a pair of corners (45:04, 48:11).
The Bears (1-6, 0-1 Ivy League) had a handful of chances in the second, coming on three penalty corners but were unable to find the back of the cage as Columbia's defense closed the door.
Columbia recorded four more penalty corners in the second while Brown totaled three. Hammaker finished the game with nine saves in the cage for the Bears while junior Rachel Lanouette (Windham, N.H.) recorded two shots for the offense.
The Bears will return home to Goldberger Family Field to host a pair of games, starting with an Ivy League contest against Dartmouth on Saturday, Sept. 30. Brown will also welcome Sacred Heart on Sunday, Oct. 1 for a non-conference showdown. Both games will start at noon.
Video of all Brown field hockey home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Network.
