PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Both teams endured two lightning delays as well as two overtime periods as the Brown field hockey team was defeated by Dartmouth, 3-2, in a shootout at Goldberger Family Field on Saturday afternoon.
"Today was a true battle between two talented and passionate teams," said head coach Jill Reeve. "It could've gone either way. I am proud of the way we played and battled. Hannah Leckey had an outstanding game."
After two thrilling overtime periods, the teams went into a shootout. Just like the overtimes, the first round of the shootout was not enough, as the teams were tied 1-1 after five shooters. Each side made its first stroke attempt in the sudden death round. Dartmouth's Kira Koehler made the next stroke and Hailey Valerio forced a missed attempt to give the Big Green the victory.
Valerio concluded the game with six saves in net while junior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) made 11 stops for the Bears.
Each team had a player make a defensive save in the contest, both in the second half, with sophomore Corinne Condie (St. Louis, Mo.) registering Brown's and Jessica Valvano recording Dartmouth's.
The teams also tied in penalty corners for the game, 7-7, with Dartmouth taking four in the overtime periods compared to Brown's three.
Dartmouth (4-5, 1-1 Ivy League) was the first to score in the match, doing so 7:29 into the game (Lia Constantine). The Bears countered later in the frame when junior Rachel Lanouette (Windham, N.H.) scored at 30:07. Freshman Lexi King (Granby, Conn.) provided the assist for her first collegiate point. Soon after, the game went into a 45-minute lightning delay. When the teams returned they concluded the half knotted, 1-1.
In the second half, Dartmouth regained a lead (2-1) at 43:19 when Gemma Bautista scored. Shortly after the go-ahead goal, there was another lightning delay.
Brown (1-7, 0-2 Ivy League) tied up the contest (2-2) following the stoppage when freshman Anagha Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored her team-leading fifth goal at 58:31. Lanouette recorded the assist, feeding Nayak close to the goal following a penalty corner.
The Bears had a good opportunity to put one in with eight minutes remaining in regulation on a penalty corner but could not convert, eventually sending the game into overtime. Brown held a slight 6-5 advantage in shots for the second and also led in penalty corners (2-1).
Both overtime periods were back and forth with Dartmouth holding a 4-2 advantage in shots for the first 15-minute period and also had a slight 4-3 edge for the second period.
Brown will next play Sacred Heart in a non-conference game tomorrow, Oct. 1, at Goldberger Family Field starting at noon.
Video of all Brown field hockey home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Network.
