Assistant Coach Scott Cockle joined the program in January of 2022 and enters his fifth season with the program in 2025-26, and second season as the program's top assistant.
Cockle helped lead the Varsity 8 to their first gold since 2012 at the 2024 Eastern Sprints. The Bears earned First Team All-Ivy honors, and the Ivy League Championship.
Cockle helped the Varsity 8 capture bronze at the 2022 IRA en route to a fourth-place team finish in the Ten Eyck standings. Five Bears picked up All-America honors and 18 Bears earned All-Academic accolades.
“Scott’s experience as a member of the Gold Medal winning Great Britain U23 Men’s Eight and as a winner of the 2021 Henley Championship with Oxford Brookes will be of high value to our program,” said Cooke. “He understands the standard of excellence required to be an athlete in one of the top University programs in the world and in international competition. Equally important, coaches and athletes he has worked with have recognized his ability to build relationships and strengthen teams.
“Having working with some of the top athletes and coaches in the world, Cockle will bring an unusually high understanding of training methods, race strategy and skills. He understands mental toughness and how to execute under pressure.”
Cooke notes that “Scott is fully committed to recruiting student-athletes who are highly motivated and want to be part of a high-performance program. I’m thrilled to have him join our coaching staff.”
Cockle, a native of Great Britain, graduated from Oxford Brookes University with an Upper Second Class Honors degree in Business and Management in 2021. While earning his degree, Cockle served as coxswain for the Oxford Brookes University Boat Club and also served as the Head Coach at New College, Oxford. He began coaching in 2016 with the Kingston Rowing Club and continued to coach for the Moseley Boat Club in 2018. Additionally, Cockle has served as a coach at several workshops across the London area after enrolling at Oxford Brookes in 2018.
“I feel honored to join the coaching team here at Brown University and I'm looking forward to working with a great group of people and athletes,” Cockle said. “I can't wait to get started with the team. Go Bruno!"
In competition, Cockle’s accolades span across the United Kingdom and globe. Notably, Cockle coxed Great Britain’s Men’s Eight to gold at the 2021 and 2022 U23 World Championships in Racice, Czech Republic, helping the British team post a time of 5:34.34 to edge the United States, stroked by Brown senior Gus Rodriguez, by 0.21 seconds.
Cockle also helped Oxford Brookes capture the Ladies’ Challenge Plate event at the 2021 Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames River, which is the premier event for heavyweight men’s college eights and U23 national teams.
In 2019, Cockle coxed Great Britain’s 4+ boat to silver at the U23 World Championships in Sarasota, Florida, narrowly finishing nine hundredths of a second behind Australia.
