5 Bears Set to Compete at the 2025 U23 World Championships
7/14/2025 5:20:00 PM | Men's Crew
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown men's crew program is no stranger to having athletes compete at the U23 World Championships, with at least one representative competing in each of the last six world championships dating back to 2018 (the 2020 U23 World Championships were canceled due to COVID).Â
The Bears will remain well represented at the 2025 U23 World Championships, as five members of next year's crew program will be competing in Poznan, Poland at the Malta Regatta Course from July 23-27. Elenna Seguin (USA), Davis Kelly (USA), Isaac Thurnham (Great Britain), Jack Cadwallader (Great Britain) and Luca Cassina (Italy) will all be making their first appearances at the U23 World Championships.Â
Seguin, who coxed the Varsity Eight crew for the entire season and earned Empacher-IRCA Scholar Athlete honors, will be racing with Team USA's Men's 8+ crew in Poland. Davis Kelly, an Empacher-IRCA All-American Honorable Mention who helped Brown's Varsity Eight crew finish in fifth place in the Grand Final at the 2025 IRA Championship, will be racing with Team USA's 4x crew as they hope to capture gold. Isaac Thurnham and Jack Cadwallader will both be racing for Great Britain after competing with Brown's Varsity Eight crew for the entirety of the 2024-25 season. Thurnham will be racing with the Men's 4- crew and Cadwallader will be racing with the Men's 2x crew. The youngest member of the Brown men's crew program to appear in Poland later this month is incoming freshman Luca Cassina, who will be racing with Italy's Men's 8+ crew.Â
"I am grateful for the opportunity to represent both my country and Brown Crew at the World Championships," said Davis Kelly, a rising senior and one of the leaders of the program for the 2025-26 season. "Team USA is dialed in and ready to compete. I look forward to getting back to work on the Seekonk River in September." Jack Cadwallader, who is returning to the Bears in 2025-26 for his junior season, was quoted as saying, "I'm excited for some international racing at the top U23 level. Looking to bring that experience back to Brown and hit the ground running this Fall."Â
The last member of the Brown men's crew program to compete in the U23 World Championships was Oliver Page-Kuhr '24, who raced with Canada's 8+ crew in last year's championships held in St. Catharines, Canada. Assistant Coach Scott Cockle coached Great Britain's 8+ crew to a gold medal in Varese, Italy at the 2022 U23 World Championships, while Viggo Hoite '18 and Alex Miklasevich '19 are the last members of the program to win gold as part of the starting lineup for a crew at the U23 World Championships, earning a first place finish with the four with coxswain crew for Team USA in Poznan, Poland in 2018.Â
Much like Page-Kuhr last season, Kelly, Cadwallader, Seguin, Thurnham, and Cassina will all be looking to take what they learned in Poland and apply that to next year's Varsity Eight crew and program as a whole when the Bears start racing this Fall in pursuit of the team's eighth national championship.  Â
