Softball Hits the Road to Cornell and Dartmouth; Hosts Merrimack in Busy Stretch

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball has a busy week ahead as the Bears continue to battle for a spot on the Ivy League Tournament. Brown will play six games over a four-day stretch due to changes in the schedule because of weather.
The trip begins with a weekend series at Cornell that has changed due to weather forecasted on Saturday (April 25). The series will now begin with a doubleheader on Sunday (April 26) beginning at 12:30 p.m. The Bears and Big Red will close out the series on Monday (April 27) with a single game beginning at 2:30 p.m.
After the series, Brown will travel to Dartmouth to make up the postponed game from April 19, on Tuesday (April 28). First pitch for that game is set for 4 p.m.
The long week concludes with a home doubleheader against Merrimack on Wednesday (April 29) beginning at 3 p.m. All six games are scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+.
ABOUT THE BEARS
Brown enters the weekend riding a four-game win streak and sits at 15-20 on the season. The Bears are in fifth place in the Ivy League with a 6-8 record, sitting a half game behind Penn for the fourth and final spot in the Ivy League Tournament.
Brown's pitching has been on a roll over the past week as the Bears have thrown three-straight shutouts for the first time since the 1994 season. The pitching staff is on a 22-inning scoreless streak, dating back to the first game of the Dartmouth series.
During the streak, Edie Cobb has been especially impressive, throwing a complete game shutout at Dartmouth and following that up with two relief performances where the sophomore threw a combined four scoreless innings against Holy Cross.
Macy Borowski threw five scoreless innings in a win over Holy Cross, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters. Borowski continues to lead the Ivy League in innings pitched (124.0), strikeouts (119) and strikeouts looking (31). The junior is second in the league in opposing batting average (.247) and sixth in ERA (3.33).
At the plate, Cameron Zytkewicz Ray is leading the Bears with a .330 batting average, 33 hits and seven doubles.
Brown's offense exploded with doubles in the second game of the day against Holy Cross. The Bears hit six doubles, the most in a game since hitting six against Lafayette on March 16, 2016. The Bears had four doubles in the bottom of the fifth, including three-straight from Abby Bettencourt, Borowski and Zytkewicz Ray. The four doubles in the inning were the most since a game against St. Peter's on March 17. 2017. The three-straight doubles were the first time since the Bears played Yale on April 25. 2015.
SCOUTING CORNELL
Cornell comes into the weekend 15-20 overall and just behind Brown in sixth place with a 7-11 record in Ivy play. The Big Red lost two games to Columbia last weekend but clubbed past Binghamton (10-6, 17-14) in a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday (April 21).
The Big Red boast the top offense in the Ivy League with a .356 team batting average, 401 hits, 81 doubles, 12 triples, 39 home runs and 269 RBI. Cornell is tied for the league lead with 151 walks on the season.
Lauren Holt is on a tear this year leading the Ivy League in batting average (.508), slugging percentage (1.086), on base percentage (.596), runs scored (50), hits (65), RBI (67), doubles (15), home runs (19) and walks (30).
The issue for Cornell has been in the circle. The Big Red have a team ERA of 6.94, the second highest in the Ivy League. Emma Harshberger has the lowest ERA at 5.10. Mila Fiordalisi has thrown the most innings for Cornell (85.0) and has a team-high 56 strikeouts and seven wins. She has a 6.51 ERA.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Bears are 40-40 all-time against Cornell and have won each of the last four series with the Big Red. Brown took two-of-three last season in Providence and did the same in the series at Cornell back in 2023. In both losses for Brown in the last two seasons, the Bears were shutout, losing 2-0 and 1-0.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
Dartmouth will take on Yale in a three-game series over the weekend before hosting Brown for a single game on Tuesday.
The Big Green are 4-10 in Ivy play and 6-20 overall heading into the series with the Bulldogs.
Georgia Bilski has a .480 batting average this season, the third-best in the Ivy League.
Brown swept a doubleheader with Dartmouth on April 18 with the Bears winning 5-2 and 11-0. The Bears had double-digit hits in both games.
SCOUTING MERRIMACK
Merrimack is 10-26 overall and will play a three-game MAAC series at Siena this weekend before making the trip to Providence to take on the Bears.
The Warriors swept a midweek doubleheader against Niagara on Tuesday (April 21), breaking a three-game losing streak.
Merrimack is hitting just .216 as a team heading into the weekend. Madeline Arvai leads the team in batting average (.290), hits (31), doubles (7), home runs (4) and RBI (25).
In the circle, Brandi Neil holds a 3.95 ERA. Anna Gedacht has thrown the most for Merrimack, logging a team-high 118.2 innings with 67 strikeouts. Gedacht is 6-14 on the season with a 4.72 ERA.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Brown is 4-3 all-time against Merrimack. The Bears swept a doubleheader last season, winning 8-3 and 6-0 in Providence. Brown is 3-2 all-time against the Warriors at home.
