Men's Hockey Falls in Overtime at Stonehill in Non-Conference Finale
1/24/2026 10:03:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON – Ivan Zadvernyuk scored twice, including a third period goal to force overtime, but the Stonehill Skyhawks (5-16-2, Independent) tallied the overtime winner to take a 3-2 win over the Brown Bears (4-16-0, 3-9-0 ECAC) Saturday night at Warrior Ice Arena.
"We did a lot of good things tonight, but it's hard for us to get over the hump. We need to find a way to consistently do the right things," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "Right now, we're finding ways to beat ourselves and make critical mistakes at critical times. It can't be self-fulfilling every weekend where we play well enough to be around the game, but falter in those critical moments.
"The second goal we gave up a 3-on-2 for no reason. I give our guys credit; we found a way to respond. I thought Zadvernyuk's line played great. They were a threat every time they were on the ice; they moved their feet, and they did a lot of really good things.
"We'll keep working, we'll keep battling, and we had a great week of practice. Some of it I saw from individuals and from the team, but we didn't see enough of it. I have higher expectations for some of these guys, and when the puck is dropped for the actual game, sometimes they grip it too tightly, overthink it, and forget the simplicity of the game.
"We have five league weekends left, 10 games, six are at home, and we're good at home. And we're going to be ready to battle on Friday."
Stonehill opened the scoring on the power play 9:39 into the first period. Anthony Galante's centering pass deflected off Joel Lehtinen's skate to beat Brown goaltender Tyler Shea (33 saves).
Zadvernyuk tied the game less than two minutes later with his fourth goal of the season. Charlie Gollob collected a pass from Leo Schwartz behind the net and found Zadvernyuk for the quick shot to beat Stonehill goaltender Connor Androlewicz (34 saves).
The Bears had the majority of the scoring chances in a scoreless second period and outshot the Skyhawks, 14-9.
Matthew Romer gave Stonehill a 2-1 lead with 8:30 remaining in the game with assists credited to Lehtinen and Dominick Campione.
Zadvernyuk netted his second goal of the game with 5:52 remaining. The sophomore buried a feed from Tanner Hartman to even the score at 2-2 with Gollob adding the secondary assist.
Evan Orr scored the overtime winner 2:51 into the frame with a one-timer off a feed from Frank Ireland for his third goal of the season.
