Men's Hockey Skates to 3-3 Tie Against Colgate
1/30/2026 11:03:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (4-16-1, 3-9-1 ECAC) tallied three goals in the opening period, but the Colgate Raiders (9-13-3, 6-5-2 ECAC) fought back to even the game in a 3-3 tie Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. The Raiders won the shootout for the extra league point.
"I thought the guys did a lot of good things; they had a great first period – it was one of the better first periods we've played all year," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "We got a 3-0 lead, and they clawed back. We had chances, they had chances, it ended up being a pretty good hockey game. I thought we were on our heels a little bit as the game wore on.
"We need to look at the positives; it was a tie game, and we got a point. We scored a power play goal, and our penalty kill was pretty good. We've been pretty good at home, and we have another opportunity at home tomorrow against a really good hockey team. We'll be ready to battle.
"It's been an interesting week for them. I thought they responded pretty well, and I was happy overall. For me, I'm just going to enjoy being on the bench at Brown with this group for these last five games. It's a special place. I never take it lightly to have the opportunity to represent the college and lead this hockey team. I do it to the best of my ability; it doesn't always look great, but I pour my heart and soul into everything I do and have a lot of pride in what we've accomplished over these years."
Mike Cataldo opened the scoring 3:38 into the game with a short handed goal. Owen Dyer forced a turnover at the Brown defensive blue line and Cataldo found the loose puck and drove to the net and beat Colgate goaltender Reid Dyck (27 saves) with a quick shot.
Ivan Zadvernyuk doubled the lead less than two minutes later with his sixth goal of the season. The sophomore collected a pass from Charlie Gollob just above the goal line and beat Dyck with a bad angle shot. Zackary Tonelli added the secondary assist on the goal.
Ryan St. Louis capped the opening run with a power play goal 7:32 into the period. St. Louis received a pass from Alex Pineau in the slot and deked around Dyck for his seventh goal of the season. Tanner Hartman picked up the secondary assist on the man-up goal.
The Raiders responded late in the first as Bobby Metz tipped a point shot from Robby Newton to beat Brown goaltender Tyler Shea (23 saves) for his second goal of the season.
Colgate cut the lead to one 3:21 into the second period as Simon Labelle tallied his tenth goal of the campaign off assists from Ryan Sullivan and Max Nagel.
Labelle tallied his second of the game 10:31 into the third period to tie the game at 3-3. The senior finished a feed from Isaiah Norlin with Sullivan adding the secondary assist.
Shea robbed Daniel Panetta of a goal 1:10 into the overtime period on a Colgate odd-man rush. Dyck made a great save on Zadvernyuk seconds later to extend the extra frame.
Nagel tallied the lone shootout goal to give the Raiders the extra league point.
