PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer program defeated Northeastern 2-0 on Thursday night, improving to a 4-1-0 record in 2025.
The Bears dominated the first half outshooting the Huskies 15-1, with five shots landing on target. Brown hit two crossbars early in the half, and had multiple near misses.
Ayla Sahin remained aggressive, recording five shots in the first half, using her speed to generate several opportunities. Ella Weil was also assertive with three shots in the first frame, as the Bears earned five corner kicks. It remained a 0-0 draw at halftime.
Brown began the second half with the same intensity, finding space on the pitch. The Bears hit their third crossbar of the night, but Weil was there to bury the rebound as Brown took a 1-0 lead.
The coaching staff took advantage of a deep bench as 20 Bears saw action against Northeastern, including Gurleen Toor, who took over in net for Bella Schopp in the second half.
A pair of first-year players contributed to the Bears' second goal, as Jael-Marie Guy scored her first collegiate goal. Naomi Nnewihe recorded the first assist of her career, finding Guy in front of the net. Guy then lifted the ball over Huskies' goalkeeper Eliza Teplow with a nifty touch.
The Bears remained dominant all night, recording 27 shots and 11 shots on goal. Joy Okonye facilitated numerous passes that led to strong chances, as the midfield was pivotal in moving the ball up the field.
Schopp and Toor each recorded a save, but the Bears' defense diffused every Huskies' offensive possession with ease. The back line of Brook Birtwistle, Naya Cardoza, Kyra Treanor, and Chesney Robinson continued to show its prowess in a strong defensive effort.
"I thought we had a good game for the most part," said Messing Family Head Coach Kia McNeill. "We were generating a lot of chances. It was good that we were hitting the crossbar and the post, and testing the goalkeeper. It was just a matter of time."
The Bears will head to North Carolina to take on the 17th nationally ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Sunday.
