WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Brown women's soccer program earned a result against the 17th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons with a 1-1 draw.
The Bears created chances early and put the Demon Deacons on their heels. Ayla Sahin recorded two shots in the first half, after forcing turnovers by the Wake Forest defenders.
Senior goalkeeper Bella Schopp was consistent in the first half, making two saves. The Bears outshot Wake Forest 5-4 in the first half.
The game was tied 0-0 entering the halftime break.
The Bears created more chances in the second half, breaking through in the 67th minute with a goal from Jael-Marie Guy. She bent a shot from outside the box into the top left corner to beat the Wake Forest goalkeeper. Joy Okonye earned the assist, which was her third of the season.
Brown didn't slow down after the goal. They continued pressing and stayed on the offensive as the clock ticked down in the game.
With just over four minutes remaining, Wake Forest scored the equalizing goal.
Brown outshot Wake Forest 14-10 in the game. The Bears had six shots on goal and earned a total of five corners.
I'm really proud of the way our team came out today, said Messing Family Head Coach Kia McNeill. We were ready to play and gave Wake Forest all they could handle. We created some quality chances and knew this game was going to come down to taking advantage of those opportunities. Jael's finish in the second half was a great finish. Honestly, I thought we did enough to win, so it's disappointing to concede late after such a strong defensive performance. That said, this result shows that we can go toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the country. It should be a big confidence boost for our group as we head into the remainder of our non-conference games We've shown we can compete with anyone, and now it's about building on that and asserting ourselves in the games to come so that we are in good form come conference play.
The Bears will be back in action on Thursday, September 11, when they face Hofstra at home.
